Why Management is a Popular Choice After SEE in Nepal

Student Curiosity After SEE: Which Stream to Choose?

Students who have recently passed the Secondary Education Examination (SEE)—considered the golden gateway to higher education—are now eager to choose their subject for Grade 11. Questions like “Which stream should I pursue?” and “Where should I study?” are common.

Colleges have already begun their enrollment campaigns, offering various streams, including Management, Science, Humanities, Education, and Technical-Vocational programs.

Transition from SLC to SEE and the Grading System

Previously, the School Leaving Certificate (SLC) exam was conducted, with students graded as Distinction, First Division, Second/Third Division. That system has now shifted to GPA-based grading for SEE.

Historically, most students who passed SLC—and now SEE—preferred the Management stream. According to the Faculty of Management at Tribhuvan University, 48.12% of SEE graduates choose Management, and this figure continues to rise annually.

Why Management Education Attracts Students

Mahendra Chalise, Dean of the Faculty of Management at Tribhuvan University, explains that Management is a top choice due to its practical and life-relevant applications, along with a straightforward academic approach.

Although all subjects are important, Chalise emphasizes that Management offers practical advantages in both professional and personal life. He states, “Management is the art of organizing, planning, leading, and controlling—essential to achieving goals effectively in any organization or personal endeavor.”

Global Relevance of Management Studies

Chalise adds that Management education is globally popular because it helps organizations efficiently organize their human resources, time, capital, and materials. Whether in the service sector, business, industry, or healthcare, leadership roles now almost always require a background in Management.

Students with a Management education enjoy global job opportunities, entrepreneurial potential, and key roles in sectors such as education, healthcare, employment, production, and finance. The need for Management graduates is growing even in developing countries like Nepal.

In developed nations, leadership roles in major companies are rarely achieved without Management education.

Easy Accessibility for Students

Management is accessible for both high and average achievers, making it a popular stream. Most old and new colleges affiliated with various universities offer Management courses—even those in remote villages.

There are more than 850 campuses under Tribhuvan University that offer Management. Other universities, such as Purbanchal, Pokhara, Mid-West, Sanskrit, and Buddhist institutions, also include Management in their curriculum.

Dean Chalise points out that over 100 subjects fall under the Management umbrella, making it a diverse and practical field. With abundant employment opportunities and entrepreneurial scope, students are increasingly drawn to this faculty.

Student and Expert Perspectives

Jitendra Prasad Upadhyaya, Campus Chief of Nepal Commerce Campus, the oldest Management college in the country, shares that students prefer Management because it is practical, simple, and life-oriented.

Upadhyaya notes that while all subjects have value, Management’s broad, applied scope makes it appealing to both students and parents. “Management study is growing globally,” he says, “There is high demand for graduates in labor and employment sectors. It helps not just in the job market but also in personal success."

Choosing Wisely After SEE

According to Upadhyaya, students with high or average GPA can easily study Management. He advises SEE graduates to avoid choosing subjects based on rumors or peer pressure. Instead, students should follow their interests to ensure future success.

In Nepal, the growing number of banks and financial institutions has expanded the scope of Management. With multinational companies entering the market and the economy diversifying, Management education offers better employment and entrepreneurship options.

Young entrepreneur Ganesh Tandon, who operates his own business after completing a Bachelor’s in Management, encourages SEE graduates to choose this field. He says, “The scope and dimension of Management is vast. Even after graduation, it’s relatively easier to find jobs. Management also inspires you to become an entrepreneur.”

Management and Career Development

Vishnu Bhandari, currently working at Kamana Sewa Development Bank while gaining experience from various financial institutions highlights the importance of Management studies for employment and career development.

He says, “Management opens doors to jobs in various sectors. That doesn’t mean other subjects aren’t important, but I find Management more life-relevant.”

Diverse Specializations Under Management

The Management stream includes a range of subjects, such as:

  • BBS (Bachelor of Business Studies)

  • BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration)

  • Hotel Management

  • Accountancy

  • Finance

  • Travel and Tourism

  • Banking and Insurance

In addition to general education, Management is increasingly integrated into technical and vocational education as well.

No Longer Only About Degrees

You don’t need to complete a university degree to become employable or start a business. However, success requires case study analysis, practical application, and serious learning efforts. Management, like every subject, demands discipline and dedication.

Experts advise students to approach studies strategically. With the right planning, achieving institutional goals becomes easier, and decision-making improves based on logic and data analysis.

Why Management Knowledge is Essential Today

  • Strategic Execution: Helps in goal achievement through planning and organizing.

  • Analytical Thinking: Improves decision-making through statistics and reasoning.

  • Business Demand: Essential for running businesses, launching products, and solving customer issues in competitive markets.

  • Personal Growth: Develops time management, leadership, and problem-solving skills.

Courses like MBA, HR, Finance, Marketing, Banking, Insurance, and Chartered Accountancy (CA) are popular career pathways that stem from a foundation in Management.

Practical Exposure and Skill Building

Studying Management involves more than theory:

  • Project work

  • Case studies

  • Internships

  • Real-world management practices

It boasts:

  • Leadership skills

  • Confidence through group discussions and presentations

  • Teamwork abilities

Although some topics—like data analysis—may seem challenging, effort pays off. Management is more than a degree—it's a life skill. Its value shouldn't be limited to job prospects alone.
