Dhaulagiri Deaf Residential Secondary School in Baglung: An Insight into the Challenges and Opportunities

Dhaulagiri Deaf Residential Secondary School, located in Baglung Ramrekha, is a unique educational institution in Nepal that provides education and residential facilities to hearing-impaired students from various districts of Nepal. The school faces several challenges due to a shortage of teachers and insufficient government funding. However, the school has also been able to create opportunities by providing vocational training to students and implementing innovative teaching methods.

The Current Situation:

The school has a diverse student population, with 295 students from 52 districts of Nepal. The majority of the students are hearing impaired, and the school is facing a severe shortage of teachers. Currently, the school has only seven teachers, but it requires 18 teachers to meet the demand.

Challenges:

The shortage of teachers is a significant challenge for the school, and the teaching methods required for hearing-impaired students are different, making it even more difficult to find qualified teachers. Additionally, the monthly amount provided by the government for residential facilities is not sufficient to meet the needs of the students.

Opportunities:

Despite these challenges, the school has been able to create opportunities for its students. The school provides vocational training in computer engineering to students in classes 9 and 10, and a three-year diploma in computer engineering is also being offered on the technical side. Furthermore, the school has implemented the school nurse program from internal resources for the past eight years.

The Way Forward:

To address the challenges faced by Dhaulagiri Deaf Residential Secondary School and other similar institutions, there is a need to change policies and increase funding from the government. The school has been providing education to students with disabilities who have been rejected by their parents and society, and it requires support to continue this vital work. The government should prioritize the education of students with disabilities and provide adequate funding to schools like Dhaulagiri Deaf Residential Secondary School.

Overall, Dhaulagiri Deaf Residential Secondary School is a unique educational institution in Nepal that provides education and residential facilities to hearing-impaired students. Despite the challenges faced by the school, it has been able to create opportunities for its students. However, the school requires support from the government to continue its essential work of providing education to students with disabilities.
