The government has appointed chairpersons of the National Land Commission in 28 districts. As per the proposal of the Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation, the chairpersons of 28 districts have been decided by the cabinet meeting. Letters of appointment have been handed over to the chairpersons of 28 districts on Friday.

Keshav Niraula was appointed as the chairman of the National Land Commission. From the Nepali Congress, Niraula became the chairman while the Maoists had a vice-chairman. Nahendra Khadka was appointed as the vice-chairman of the commission. The current government had formed the National Land Commission by dismissing the Land Problem Resolution Commission formed by the KP Sharma Oli government.

The Oli government had set up a land problem resolution commission in April 2020 with a mandate to distribute land to landless dalits and squatters. The commission was dismissed last July and a new appointment was made in August.

Four months after the appointment of the chairperson and vice-chairperson, the chairpersons of 28 districts have been appointed. The government has not been able to appoint chairpersons in all the districts due to disagreement over party affiliation. Despite the arrangement of having a 9-member working committee at the center, it has not been implemented. At the district level, there will be an eight-member working committee.

The commission has jurisdiction to distribute land to landless Dalits and squatters once. Coordination of local level and survey office has been made mandatory.
