Education Minister Pokharel Meets U.S. Chargé d’Affaires, Says Practical School Curriculum Is Being Developed
Minister for Education and Sports Sasmit Pokharel and U.S. Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Scott Urbom held a courtesy meeting at Singha Durbar on Tuesday. During the meeting, Minister Pokharel said the government was moving forward with plans to develop a practical school curriculum and was implementing various reforms in the education sector.
Minister Pokharel said work was underway to revise the National Curriculum Framework for school education. He stated that the Ministry was working to develop a practical school curriculum rather than one focused primarily on theory.
He also noted that the curriculum revision process includes efforts to incorporate sports into the curriculum from the school level.
Minister Pokharel said Nepal could cooperate with the U.S. government in areas including safe school infrastructure, digital and smart learning, teachers’ professional capacity development, school health and nutrition.
He explained that an assessment of schools’ physical infrastructure had been initiated and that budgets would be allocated in the future according to identified needs. He added that the Ministry would prioritise physical infrastructure, educational facilities and teacher training.
On the occasion, Minister Pokharel expressed confidence that the historic, friendly and trust-based relationship between Nepal and the United States would become stronger in the coming days.
During the meeting, Chargé d’Affaires Urbom said the United States was positive about providing necessary support for the development of Nepal’s education and sports sectors through bilateral understanding.
He stated that the U.S. government was aware of the various education reform initiatives undertaken by the Government of Nepal and the Ministry and remained ready to provide support and cooperation.
Chargé d’Affaires Urbom also expressed the U.S. government’s commitment to continuing its support for Nepal’s efforts to improve public school education.
