The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has imposed a fine of nearly 21.5 billion rupees on the giant Internet company Google. The commission alleged that Google took unfair advantage of its strong presence in the field of Android mobile devices. In addition, the commission has also instructed to stop their unfair business activities and to find a solution to this matter within a certain time frame.

Remember, the Competition Commission of India had earlier issued notices against Apple, Google, Amazon, Netflix, and Microsoft. The Commission was of the opinion that the company was doing anti-competitive activities in the digital sector and that there was a need for an investigation.

A Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance was also formed under the chairmanship of Yant Singha to investigate the same issue. The said committee is conducting a detailed investigation into various issues of competition.

Android operating system is the largest smartphone operating system owned by Google. Licenses issued by other companies are also issued by Google. As per the investigation, the committee found that although there is some level of competition between Apple and Android, it is only visible at the time of purchase.

This fine was imposed twice in one week. Last October 20, CCI imposed a fine of 13.37 billion 76 lakhs on Google. The CCI imposed this fine on the grounds that Google had abused its dominance in the Android mobile device business.

Then on October 25, CCI again imposed a fine of Rs 9.36 crore 44 lakh on Google. CCI was investigating these two cases separately in 2019 and 2020.
