Internet Literacy Should Improve in Nepal

Internet Freedom in Nepal

In order to increase the utilization of the Internet and minimize the misuse of the Internet, knowledgeable people have pointed out that internet literacy is essential in Nepal. Speaking at the Internet Freedom Conference held in Nepal by the Center for Media Research Nepal, he said that due to the lack of internet literacy in Nepal, citizens and policymakers need to raise awareness about the correct information of the Internet.    

 Chiranjeevi Khanal, head of Tribhuvan University, Central Department of Journalism and Media, said that although many can benefit from the Internet, many are not aware of Internet rights. Lakhnath Pandey, deputy professor of the same department, said that the readers and listeners have become powerful in recent times.    

Revati Sapkota, the Registrar of Communications in the province No 3, said that the government should pay special attention to increasing internet literacy and increase the sources of income and increase the misuse of the Internet to become popular. Ujjwal Acharya, founding president of the Center for Media Research Nepal, said that the number of Internet users in Nepal has increased, adding that there is a need to teach the correct use of the Internet.    

Information Technology Expert and Assistant Professor of Kathmandu World School, Dr. Sudhanshu Dahal, said that due to lack of information about information technology, citizen faked news and the internet have to be the victim. Former president of Internet Society Nepal Santosh Sigdel said that there are both challenges and opportunities on the Internet, adding that utilizing the opportunity is necessary to move forward as a campaign.    

 Chairman of the Center for Media Research Nepal, Rishikesh Dahal, said that the current debate is mostly focused on Internet freedom, adding that it should be understood by discussing the multidimensional aspects of the Internet. Internet security expert Sachin Thakuri said that there was a widespread attack on the Internet, pointing out the need to bring policies for the security of the internet and raise awareness among the citizens.    

Journalist Umesh Shrestha said that the trend of becoming sensational and fake news viral was more than the right news on the internet, adding that the misuse of social media created more challenges in mainstream journalism. Chairperson of the media group Nitu Pandit said that the internet was not female-friendly and that women were less accessible.    

 On Friday, Editor of the Shukrabar Saptahik KP Dhungana said that the Internet was shrinking personal freedoms. Advocate Pavitra Raut said that the increase in abuse was due to a lack of internet literacy at all. Sachin Thakuri spoke on 'Internet Security in Nepal', Santosh Sigdel 'Internet Governance in Nepal', Neetu Pandit 'Gender and Freedom in Nepal', KP Dhungana's 'Privacy and Internet in Nepal' and Umesh Shrestha had submitted the worksheet 'Research on Internet and Journalism in Nepal'.
