Nepal Telecom Plans to Shut Down CDMA Service:

Nepal Telecom is now going to shut down CDMA service completely. The CDMA service, which was launched 14 years ago by Nepal Telecom in 2006 targeting remote users, is about to be discontinued, citing the old-fashioned technology of telecommunications and the fact that equipment is no longer available in the global market. CDMA service is not able to attract users.

This technology was also very useful and popular in remote villages as CDMA coverage was higher in the early stages of the service. But in recent times, with the expansion of GSM mobile service as a new and intuitive technology, the choice of CDMA service has decreased and as a result, the number of CDMA users has been declining. The process of shutting down the service has been taken forward as it has not been able to attract the service recipients lately.

Last fiscal year, telecom announced its decision not to invest in CDMA. Earlier, the Radio Frequency Policy Determination Committee had also decided to discontinue the CDMA service provided by Nepal Telecom from 2022 AD.

The company plans to migrate existing CDMA users as 2G, 3G, and 4G users of GSM in its current annual program.

While newer versions of Forge, 5G, and other technologies are being developed in GSM technology, the investment of Telecom in CDM has not been effective due to the obligation to use only the old technology in CDMA. Also, even when there was no suitable alternative for smartphones for CDMA users, GSM facility was also a choice for the users. Services including 2G, 3G, and 4G can be operated from GSM technology.
