The recent board meeting of the Telecommunication Authority of Nepal (NTA) has paved the way for new technology by approving the 'Procedure for Testing New Technology, including 5G, 2078'. Now the way is open to test other new technologies, including 5G, which is considered to be the latest technology of the fifth generation.

In addition, service providers who want to test new technologies, including 5G, including Machine to Machine (MTM), Internet of Things (IoT), can apply to the NTA for permission.

NTA President Purushottam Khanal said that the procedure has prepared the law for testing the new technology. The market is ready for new technology, including 5G. He said the way is now open for any service provider to test it.

The procedure clarifies the process of testing new technology. For that, first of all, you have to submit an application for testing. The application should include information on new technology, locations to be tested, services to be provided, details of frequencies required for testing, and network connection and operation schedule. While testing the new technology, both rural and urban areas will have to be covered. By studying the application, the NTA may approve the trial.

The procedure states that the network should be built after approval. The work of importing and connecting the equipment required for testing the new technology should be started. The NTA will facilitate the import of such equipment. The device must be notified to the NTA after it is connected. If the equipment is not imported and connected even within three months of the approval of the application, the approval can be withdrawn.

The NTA will begin the trial period once the device is connected. The NTA will also provide the required frequency for that. At the end of the trial period, the NTA will withdraw the frequency. The trial period will be a maximum of one year. An arrangement has been made to waive the frequency fee for the said period. The service provider will not be able to charge the customer from the service operated as a trial.

If the equipment used after the trial period can be used in services including Four-G, it can be used again with the permission of NTA. In case of non-use, the equipment should be returned to the concerned vendor and informed to NTA. It is also mentioned in the procedure that a detailed report should be submitted to the NTA after the test.

Currently, Nepal Telecom is planning to test 5G in four major cities of the country. However, the NTA said there were some difficulties in the process due to the lack of a legal basis for the trial.
