Twitter Vs Indian Government Controversy

In India, the dispute between the central government and the microblogging site Twitter has been growing recently. India's central government has warned Twitter to implement the new digital rules immediately. Otherwise, the government warns of serious consequences.

In the midst of the controversy, the verification (blue tick) of some leaders has been removed by Twitter. Twitter has unverified the account of Mohan Bhagwat, head of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Dal (RSS) close to the ruling BJP. Similarly, the verification of Suresh Soni, Arun Kumar, Suresh Joshi, and Krishna Gopal has also been removed.

Twitter also unverified the personal account of Indian Vice President Benakia Naidu. In this regard, Twitter has clarified that the account has not been active for 6 months and has been unverified. But after strong protests, his account verification has now been restored.

Farmers protesting against the agricultural law had taken out a tractor-trailer on the Republic Day of India. In that process, the religious flag was hoisted by removing the Indian flag from the Red Fort. India's central government then instructed Twitter to suspend about 1,100 accounts and remove some controversial hashtags.

Twitter even blocked some accounts at the behest of the government. But after a while, Twitter blocked some accounts. Twitter lifted the suspension of some of the accounts, saying they belonged to journalists and social activists.

Twitter said it was in favor of freedom of expression. Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had expressed dissatisfaction over the decision of Twitter. After the second wave of coronavirus started in India and people started dying due to lack of oxygen and beds in hospitals, the government was heavily criticized on social media including Twitter.
