Incentive Spirometer

Lung Exercises for Covid Patients Using Incentive Spirometer: The Covid-19 infection attacks the respiratory system and damages the tissues, causing difficulty in breathing. That's why it becomes important to do some exercise before and after infection to reduce damage to the lungs and strengthen them.

Doing breathing exercises strengthens the lungs and also makes it easier for you to breathe. You can use a spirometer to measure the strength of the lungs.

What is a Spirometer?

The incentive spirometer is a handheld device that helps your lungs recover after surgery or lung disease. Inhaling and exhaling with the help of a spirometer helps to keep your lungs active and free of fluid. When you do breathing exercises with the help of a spirometer, the balls or pistons inside the device are raised, which is used to measure the volume of your breath.

This device is beneficial for recovering from respiratory diseases like pneumonia, bronchitis, or COVID-19. Do not use this device in front of others, as there is a risk of infection.

The correct way to use a spirometer:

The spirometer can be used for both inhalation and exhalation. Hold it straight to inhale and hold it upside down to exhale.

Step 1: Sit comfortably on a chair or the corner of your bed.

Step 2: Hold your spirometer upright at I-level.

Step 3: Place the mouthpiece in the mouth and close the lips tightly, so that the air does not come out.

Step 4: Breathe slowly through the mouth and try to keep the balls as high as possible. Do this 5 times.

Step 5: Now turn the spirometer upside down and try to keep the balls as high as possible.

So that there is no problem in breathing, so take a rest in between. If you feel weak or faint while using the spirometer, stop this exercise immediately. Do not do this more than 10-12 times, as it can cause breathlessness.
