Gorkhapatra Sansthan Decided to Establish Gorkhapatra Academy
Gorkhapatra Sansthan is going to operate “Gorkhapatra Academy.” The institution, which carries the historical legacy of Nepali journalism, has decided to establish Gorkhapatra Academy with the objective of playing a leading role in enhancing the quality and professionalism of the journalism sector.
Purpose of Establishing Gorkhapatra Academy
The institution has stated that the academy is being operated to carry out activities such as developing the human resources required for the field of journalism, conducting study and research on contemporary issues, providing training, and publishing books.
According to Acting Director of the Planning Department of the institution, Tarabahadur Basyal, the meeting of the institution’s Board of Directors held on Mangsir 12 under the chairpersonship of the General Manager of the institution, Lalbahadur Airi, decided to establish Gorkhapatra Academy.
Legal Basis and Scope of Work
Section 17 (6) of the Gorkhapatra Sansthan Act, 2019 has defined the functions, duties and powers of the institution. Basyal stated that the academy is being operated to carry out activities such as research, training and exploration within the scope prescribed by that section.
The meeting has also approved the “Gorkhapatra Academy Operation Procedure, 2082.” According to the procedure, the academy will work to improve the quality of the institution’s publications and to enhance the professional capacity of its human resources.
The procedure further states that the academy will work to increase media and digital literacy for the professional development of journalism, to identify sustainable sources to increase the income of Gorkhapatra Sansthan, and to conduct training with the consent and financial participation of the concerned bodies in the course of implementing government policies and programmes and fulfilling the functions and duties of constitutional bodies.
Training, Research and Literacy Programs
General Manager of the institution, Lalbahadur Airi, stated that through the academy, the capacity of media workers will be expanded in the extended dimensions of journalism, and training programmes based on journalism curricula will be conducted.
He also informed that the decision to establish the academy includes conducting digital and mass communication literacy programmes, as well as study, research and training programmes.
Task Force, Experts and Institutional Coordination
In order to operate the academy, a task force will be formed with the chairperson and general manager of the institution serving as patrons. As required, a roster of subject experts, trainers and consultants will be prepared for the academy.
The institution has stated that, in fulfilling its responsibilities, the academy will coordinate with the relevant government bodies, universities, the Journalists’ Federation, experts and private institutions. The academy will also carry out responsibilities such as improving and expanding the digital archive, e-library, online training and the digital publication system.
