Kathmandu Metropolitan City is going to provide training related to digital literacy to enable city residents to carry out electronic service-related tasks. Spokesperson Navin Manandhar of the metropolis stated that a digital literacy training program is being launched to protect people from internet-related insecurity.

According to spokesperson Manandhar, this kind of training has been decided upon to encourage the productive use of increasing technological applications and to protect from technology-related risks.

“With the use of technology, every person must know about the proper use of the internet and basic digital security,” spokesperson Manandhar said. “As much as technology makes life easier, if one is not careful while using it, the risks increase equally.”

He stated that training is necessary to increase easy access to services through the proper use of technology and to protect the residents of the metropolis from possible risks.

According to him, for the effective implementation of the electronic governance they intend to carry out, citizens must be enabled to use technology with confidence. They must be made knowledgeable about cyber security. This responsibility is fulfilled through training. He also said that to make Nepal’s governance and administration transparent, the country must be made digital.

According to Anirudra Nepal, Head of the Information Technology Department of the metropolis, in the first phase, training will begin in Wards 17, 18, 19, and 29, and will gradually be expanded to other wards. Digital literacy training can be provided by categorizing subjects as basic, intermediate, and specialized based on the trainees’ knowledge of information technology.

Mobile technology is the first necessary subject for training. If a smartphone is not set up correctly, personal details may be stolen. Through fraudulent applications, someone may take personal and family information and use it for criminal activities.

For this, every user must know the ways to avoid risks from applications, the use of mobile data, the use and security of Wi-Fi. Every person using the internet must have knowledge of digital financial literacy, mobile banking and wallets, online payments, possible frauds, and ways to avoid them.

Along with personal privacy, one must know the methods of creating strong passwords for cyber security, the use of OTP (one-time password), viruses, antivirus, identifying suspicious links, and ways to avoid them. The metropolis says that the training is being launched to help residents understand all these subjects.
