Tribhuvan University Clears 300 Ropani of Bushland in Kirtipur
Around 300 ropani of bushland within the premises of Tribhuvan University (TU) Central Office in Kirtipur has been cleared. The initiative was taken under the leadership of the Minister for Education, Science, and Technology, Mahabir Pun.
Just two days after assuming office, Minister Pun called for the clearance of approximately 350 ropani of overgrown land inside the TU Kirtipur premises to develop it into a beautiful park. He was appointed as minister on Ashoj 5. Following his call, volunteers from various organizations and TU employees jointly participated in the bush-clearing campaign through a labor contribution program.
The area that has now been cleared was once developed into a garden during the coronation ceremony of the late King Birendra. Over time, due to a lack of maintenance, the garden had turned into dense bushland. According to TU, the site is the first phase of a broader plan to remove all overgrown vegetation across the university premises.
Akkaldev Mishra, Principal of TU University Campus, stated that the clearing was carried out in coordination with the Forest Department, removing invasive weeds such as Banmara, as well as old, dying, and fallen trees. The cleaned area lies in front of the cricket ground. Mishra further shared that TU plans to rebuild a beautiful park on the cleared land; however, additional funding will be required to clear other areas that are also heavily infested with Banmara.
Minister Pun said that the first-phase park construction in the cleared area will be undertaken with support from social organizations and donors. “We are exploring ways to manage the funds needed to develop the park. Anyone who can help in raising or providing funds is welcome to come forward,” he said.
He has also directed TU officials to bring concrete proposals for improving the university’s academic, financial, administrative, and physical infrastructure, aiming to transform the university into an attractive educational destination. TU has confirmed that preparations are already underway as per the minister’s instructions.
