Overview
Gandhi Adarsha Secondary School, Kathmandu was established in 1953 A.D. (2010 B.S) as a community-based educational institution located in Kageswori, Manahara Gram, Kathmandu, Nepal. It is affiliated with the National Examination Board (NEB) and approved by the Ministry of Education. It offers educational programs from Nursery to Grade Twelve (10+2 in Management, Humanities, and Education streams).
Historical background
Impressed by the ideology and ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, the world's first prominent advocate of the non-violent movement, Tulsimehar Shrestha announced the 56 Ropani lands, provided by the then Government of Matrika Prasad Koirala, at Manohara, located in Gothatar, Kathmandu. Immediately after the Rana period, the "genital prison" has been built in this place By the decision of the Council of Ministers, Tulsi Maher appears to have been available for use in the social welfare work in 2010 BS.
The primary objective of Tulsimehar was to promote women's education for their self-reliance and awareness, the production of household goods using locally available raw materials, and the upliftment of women from allegedly lower-class, community, and caste backgrounds in society.
Gandhi Adarsh Mahila Vidyalaya Bhavan was established on 2010 Magh 20 by Then King Tribhuvan in the place of the present Kageshwari Manohara Municipality - 9 with the main initiative of Tulsi Meher after the transformation of the year 2007 BS.
Although initially chaired by Tulsi Meher, the school came under the government of Nepal after the implementation of the new education system in 2028 BS (1971 A.D.). Currently, all stakeholders, including intellectuals, educators, social workers, and politicians, have contributed to the development and expansion of this school, which will conduct teaching activities up to Class 12. Although an entrepreneurially opened school providing education for women was established in the early years, skillful training was also offered in 2014, following the construction and management of the building.
The school has been enrolling students in the 2018 BS and has been administering the entrance exam (SLC) since the 2019 BS. Having celebrated the Golden Festival of its founding on 2060 Magh 21, the school has been producing the necessary manpower for the country, society, and community to date. It has also achieved distinct popularity in this field.
Geographical situation
Located on the plains of the Kathmandu Valley and the banks of the Holy Manhara River, this school is situated in Kageshwari Manahara Municipality-9. Located about 7 km east of Ratnapark, the east and south sides of this school are paved roads, and the west and north sides are Nepal Charkha Pracharak Gandhi Tulsi Smarak Mahaguthi. The atmosphere of the extended school campus, situated in an area of around 11 Ropanies, is peaceful, picturesque, and student-friendly.
School community
Around the school and within its service area, there are people of diverse religions, castes, and languages. In this region, where social harmony and cultural tolerance are maintained, the prevalence of Brahman (Dahal, Chapagai, Sanjel, Pudasaini, etc.), Chhetri (Thapa, Khadka, Rayamajhi, Basnet, etc.), and other groups, such as Purkuti, Mangrati, Bishunkhe, and Thapamgar, has been notable in recent times. Due to the increasing number of people from diverse ethnicities and languages, a multilingual and multicultural scene is evident in the school.
Constantly. In this community, which incorporated agriculture as a major profession 20-22 years ago, the addition of employment areas to the community appears to have improved the economic status of its residents. Although most of the children studying in the school are parents and domestic workers living in this area, the social status of the students is very low, despite their strong social, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds.
Definition of service area
In most Kathmandu Valley community schools, children and parents are legally prohibited from living on wages, and the state is also legally forbidden to do so. Still, some people in society are kept as domestic laborers by the practice of employing domestic workers who are often overlooked due to the common man's mood. Of course, a Permanent and certain geographic service area school must, however difficult to envisage, include Kageshwari Manohara Ward Numbers 6, 7, 8, 9, and Kathmandu Metropolitan City Ward Number 32 within the area of the school's service area.
