Singha Devi Secondary School, Terhathum (सिंह देवी माध्यमिक विद्यालय, तेह्रथुम) was established in 1975 AD (2032 BS) as a community-based educational institution, located in Laligurans Municipality-6, Sungnam, Terhathum, Nepal.

It is affiliated with the National Examination Board (NEB) and approved by the Ministry of Education. It offers educational programs from Early Childhood Development (ECD) to grade 10 and Ten Plus Two (Class 11 and 12) in Management, Humanities, and Education streams.

Historical Background

Located in Panchamidanda, Sungnam-3, Tehrathum District, the then Shree Rastriya Divyeshwari Primary School was later relocated to Sungnam-1. Following the relocation, the education-loving parents of Ward No. 4 in Sungnam VDC began gathering their small children even during the winter and built a thatched hut, laying the foundation for re-establishing a school in their community.

According to elders of the area, the name of that hut-based school was Singhadevi Primary School, located in Sungnam-4.

During those early days, Khil Bahadur Baral and Chhatra Bahadur Baral from Sungnam-4 served as teachers and made notable contributions to the school.

Later, in the year 2032 B.S., under the leadership of the late Mr. Avidal Khadka of Sungnam-4 and with support from other intellectual guardians, the school was relocated to the side of Mangalbare Bazaar in Sungnam-3.

In 2034 B.S., after receiving formal approval as a primary school, the school was upgraded to lower secondary level in 2036 B.S., through the active efforts of the late Mr. Digbir Karki from Sungnam-4.

In 2053 B.S., after organizing a mass meeting of guardians from Sungnam and Solma VDCs, the school officially began operating Class 8, thereby formally initiating its status as a secondary school.

The credit for this continued institutional growth goes to the founding principals and committed guardians who dedicated themselves to the school’s long-term development.

From 2053 B.S. to 2060 B.S., the secondary level was operated entirely from private funding. The pain of managing operations with limited resources during that time is still remembered vividly.

In 2061 B.S., the school received its first government-approved secondary-level position, and by 2065 B.S., it was operating under a semi-private model.

Despite earlier hardships, the courage and determination shown by the guardians and community members led to another milestone in 2067 B.S.—the initiation of the higher secondary level (10+2).

This move marked a significant chapter in the school’s history, preserving the unforgettable contributions of the local people who continuously supported and strengthened the institution.
