FY 2082/83 Special Updates
Through the budget presented on Jestha 15, 2082 BS, the Government of Nepal has taken some concrete steps to improve the living standards of public servants:
Dearness allowance
The dearness allowance, previously NPR 2,000 per month, has been increased this year to NPR 5,000 per month. This applies equally to all ranks of the Nepal Army.
Basic pay
The existing basic pay scale implemented from Shrawan 2079 BS has been continued this year as well.
Ration scale revision
For soldiers serving in Himalayan and remote areas, ration allowance has been increased by an average of 10% to 15% based on market prices.
How to Understand the Nepal Army Salary System
To understand military salary, it is necessary to know some technical terms:
-
Starting basic - The initial salary received at appointment or promotion.
-
Grade count and grade rate - In the Army, one grade is added each year after satisfactory service. The grade rate is the fixed amount added to salary each year.
-
Ration allowance - This is one of the most significant features of the Army. Depending on district rate, it is received in cash or in kind.
-
Gross income - Salary + grade + dearness allowance + ration + other allowances.
-
Net/Take-home - The amount received in the bank after all deductions.

Allowances and Benefits
In Nepal Army service, salary alone is not everything. Various allowances make economic life easier:
A) Ration allowance
This is the most distinctive facility in the Army.
Kathmandu Valley and accessible districts
Around NPR 6,000 to NPR 7,500.
Himalayan and remote districts (Mustang, Humla, Manang)
From NPR 15,000 to NPR 22,000.
This allowance is tax-free and is provided directly through mess arrangements or as cash.
B) Kit/Uniform allowance (Kit/Uniform Allowance)
A lump sum of NPR 10,000 to NPR 15,000 per year is provided for uniforms and boots.
C) Peacekeeping (UN Mission)
A major reason many youths are attracted to the Army is “mission” service.
In UN missions, allowances are paid at UN-determined rates (around USD 1,100 to USD 1,300 per month).
From a one-year mission, even a Sainya can save around NPR 1,500,000 to NPR 2,000,000.
D) Remote duty and operational allowances
Teams assigned to special operations, VVIP security, or extremely remote postings have provisions to receive a “special allowance” of 15% to 25% of basic salary.
Mandatory Deductions
To calculate take-home pay, these deductions must be understood:
-
Employees Provident Fund (EPF) - 10% of basic salary.
-
Contributory pension fund - 6% deduction for those recruited after Shrawan 2076.
-
Army welfare fund - A small monthly deduction (NPR 200 to NPR 500) for collective welfare of soldiers.
-
Term life insurance - Around NPR 400 to NPR 800 per month depending on rank.
-
Income tax (TDS) - Tax at prevailing rates if annual taxable income exceeds NPR 500,000 (single).

Army Welfare Fund
The Nepal Army’s value cannot be understood by salary alone. The Welfare Fund benefits are rarely found in the Sainya sector or other government services:
Education
Affordable and quality education for soldiers’ children in military colleges.
Health
Free treatment at Birendra Military Hospital for all ranks and their dependent families.
Loan facility
Loans for house construction or business at concessional interest rates (around 4% to 5%).
Scholarships
Attractive scholarships for children for higher education.
Comparative Analysis
The Government of Nepal maintains the same basic salary for the civil service, police, and the army. There is uniformity between Gazetted Third Class (Section Officer) and the salary scale of Major/Lt. Colonel levels in the Army. However, due to the Army’s ration allowance and welfare benefits, their overall economic security appears somewhat stronger than that of civil servants.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1) Has the Army salary increased in FY 2082/83?
The basic salary has not increased, but the monthly dearness allowance has been raised to NPR 5,000 and annual grade increments have continued.
2) Is salary paid during training?
Full basic salary and ration are provided. However, some special allowances begin only after posting to a unit after training.
3) What is a grade?
It is an additional reward received after one year of satisfactory service. A Sainya can receive up to 8 grades.
4) How many years of service are required for pension in the Army?
As per the current rule, 20 years (a proposal of 16–18 years for some ranks is under discussion).
5) Why does ration allowance differ among individuals?
It differs due to geographic posting, not rank. A Sainya posted in Humla receives higher ration allowance than one in Kathmandu.

Conclusion
Entering the Nepal Army means securing a safe future. The FY 2082/83 salary structure enables a soldier to live a dignified life in society and meet basic family needs. However, considering market inflation, there are ongoing demands for further adjustments. Still, due to available allowances and welfare facilities, this service remains among the top choices for Nepal’s youth.
If you or your child is planning to join the Army, consider not only salary, but also the discipline and pride of serving the nation.
