PCL Nursing Programme

Gurbhakot Polytechnic Institute offers PCL Nursing, also referred to as the Staff Nurse programme. The course runs for three academic years.

The CTEVT PCL Nursing curriculum follows a yearly system. One academic year consists of up to 40 weeks, and one academic week consists of up to 40 hours, excluding the evaluation period. The medium of instruction is English and/or Nepali.

The programme includes theory classes, practical learning, clinical practice, and community health learning. The first year covers foundational nursing care in hospital and community settings. The second year covers preventive, promotive, and therapeutic nursing care for adults, elderly persons, and people with mental health needs. The third year includes pediatric, midwifery, gynecology, leadership, and management areas.

Who Can Apply for PCL Nursing?

Students can apply for PCL Nursing when they meet the entry criteria and pass the entrance examination administered by CTEVT. Applicants who meet the entry criteria are selected for admission on a merit basis.

Admission Flow for PCL Nursing

Admission is based on academic eligibility, the CTEVT entrance examination, and merit selection. At Gurbhakot Polytechnic Institute, admission also includes CTEVT-prescribed quotas and Karnali Province district-based quotas.

A practical admission sequence is:

For Karnali Province, one quota has been allocated for each of the ten districts. Surkhet and Dailekh have two federal electoral constituencies, so two quotas have been allocated for each of these districts. In total, 12 quotas have been set aside for Karnali Province. One local quota has also been allocated for Gurbhakot Municipality.

Attendance and Examination Requirements

Students must maintain at least 90% attendance in each subject to appear in the respective final examination. This requirement applies across theory, practical, clinical, and field-based learning activities.

The examination system includes internal assessment and final examination. Students must pass all subjects in both theory and practical components for certification. The required pass marks are 40% in theory and 50% in practical.

Course Fee and Student Expenses

The course fee for the three-year PCL Nursing programme at Gurbhakot Polytechnic Institute has been set at Rs. 171,000. Students are responsible for their own food and accommodation expenses.

Accommodation is available in the nearby community. Gurbhakot Municipality has supported the establishment of the institute and matters related to student accommodation management. Students live in the community, with local support available when students face illness or other difficulties.

Nursing Laboratories and Learning Facilities

The institute has four nursing laboratories required for the programme:

Students go to Province Hospital Surkhet for practical practice. Province Hospital Surkhet supports students in practical training and provides guidance related to academic and practical areas.

Mehelkuna Hospital of the Government of Nepal is located nearby, and its approval process has moved forward. Since its infrastructure is under construction, students go to Province Hospital Surkhet, about 30 kilometers away, for practical practice.

For transport to community fields and other practical activities, the institute uses a school bus provided by Gurbhakot Municipality.

Student Activities and Campus Environment

The institute has grounds for extracurricular activities, including a volleyball ground and a badminton ground. Large grounds near the institute are available for football.

A kitchen garden is used for nutrition-related learning. Nursing students use the garden to produce nutritious food and learn through demonstration. The garden also supports practical agriculture-related learning within the campus environment.

Governance and Management

Gurbhakot Polytechnic Institute has an eight-member management committee. The Chief District Officer is a member of the committee, along with other office bearers.

The committee discusses and decides institutional matters related to policy formulation, quota determination, fee determination, and related issues.

Certification and Further Study Path

Students who pass all components of all subjects across the three years are considered to have completed the course. Successful students are awarded the Proficiency Certificate Level in Nursing.

Graduates are eligible for the position equivalent to Non-gazetted 1st class technical level as Staff Nurse, or as prescribed by the Public Service Commission of Nepal. Graduates are also eligible to pursue Bachelor of Nursing or an equivalent course as per university rules.
