Purbanchal University College of Environment and Forestry (PUCEF)

Established in 2018, Purbanchal University College of Environment and Forestry (PUCEF) is the sixth constituent college of Purbanchal University. The college is located in Gothgaun, Morang, Nepal, and focuses on forestry, environmental administration, natural resource management, and related fields.

PUCEF runs a four-year B.Sc. Forestry program and a two-year master’s program in Environmental Administration and Management. Its academic work covers classroom study, practical courses, field training, research, seminars, and project work. Programs Offered

Bachelor of Science in Forestry

The B.Sc. Forestry program runs for four years across eight semesters. It combines scientific foundations, general forestry subjects, field-based study, professional courses, seminars, and research.

Students complete courses throughout all eight semesters. The final stage includes a project paper in an area connected with the student’s interest and specialization. An academic adviser assigned by PUCEF guides the research process.

The curriculum carries 165 credit hours. Theory and practical components are included across the program, with field training appearing in several semesters. The eighth semester places greater attention on professional study, seminar work, and the project paper.

Student Intake and Seat Allocation

PUCEF has an annual intake of 48 students for the B.Sc. Forestry program.

The seats are allocated as follows:

• Scholarship seats: 3, according to university criteria

• General seats: 45

Eligibility and Admission

Applicants must have completed one of the following academic routes:

• I.Sc.

• 10+2 with biology or mathematics

• Certificate in Forestry

• Three-year Diploma in Forestry

The previous qualification must be from a recognized institution, with at least 50 percent marks in aggregate.

Admission is based on an entrance examination conducted by Purbanchal University. Applicants are selected according to their merit scores in the entrance process.

Attendance Requirement

Students must attend at least 80 percent of the theory and practical classes in each subject. Students who do not meet the required attendance are not eligible to appear in the final examination for that subject.

B.Sc. Forestry Curriculum Structure

The curriculum moves from basic sciences and social foundations to general forestry, applied subjects, field study, and research.

Students study Scientific Writing and Communication Skill, Urban Forestry, Experimental Design and Statistical Analysis, Non-Timber Forest Products II, Ecosystem Services and Payment, GIS in Natural Resource Management, Bioenergy, Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation, Soil Survey, Mapping and Degraded Land Management, International Forestry Practices and Organizational Study, and Natural Resource Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation.

The program concludes with seminar work and a six-credit project paper.

Master’s in Environmental Administration and Management

The master’s program runs for two years and addresses the administrative, policy, and management dimensions of environmental work. It brings environmental knowledge together with planning, governance, sustainable development, and natural resource administration.

The program covers areas such as environmental policy, administration, resource management, environmental governance, and sustainable development. Learning activities include coursework, case studies, research projects, and field-based work.

The academic scope is relevant to environmental issues in Nepal as well as wider environmental concerns. Students examine how environmental problems can be studied, how policies are developed, and how programs connected with environmental protection and resource management are carried out.

Academic Departments

Department of Basic Science and Humanities

This department covers the scientific and supporting subjects required for forestry education. Its academic areas include Forest Botany, Forest Zoology, Economics, Technical English, Tree Physiology, Plant Biochemistry, Geology, Elementary Statistics and Computer Application, and Forest Research and Methodology.

Department of Ecology and Environmental Science

The department concentrates on biodiversity, ecology, environmental assessment, climate-related study, and ecosystem management. Its subjects include Forest Ecology, Biodiversity Conservation, Environmental Assessment, and Ecosystem Services and Payment.

Department of Forest Products Utilization

This department deals with forest products, timber, harvesting, supply systems, non-timber forest products, wood science, and bioenergy. Its subject areas include Wood Anatomy, Tree Harvesting and Supply Management, Non-Timber Forest Products, Timber Utilization, Wood Science and Technology, Silvicultural Systems, and Bioenergy.

Department of Forest Survey and Engineering

The department covers forest surveying, engineering, remote sensing, and geographic information systems. Teaching addresses forest-related construction work, soil and water conservation engineering, and the use of remote sensing and GIS in natural resource management.

Department of Natural Resource Management

Department of Soil and Watershed Management

This department studies soil, water, watersheds, hydrology, rangelands, land use, and degraded land. Its subjects include Soil Science, Forest Hydrology and Meteorology, Soil and Water Conservation Engineering, Rangeland Management, Watershed Management, and Soil Survey, Mapping and Degraded Land Management.

Department of Wildlife and Protected Area Management

The department covers wildlife biology, protected areas, conservation, recreation, tourism, and wetland-related study. Its subjects include Wildlife Biology, Protected Area Management, and Park Recreation and Ecotourism Management.

Practical Learning and Research

Practical study is built into the B.Sc. Forestry curriculum through laboratory work, field training, practical course components, seminars, and the final project paper.
