Campus Background
Rukum West is one of the most geographically remote districts of Nepal. Despite its rich natural beauty, the region has long remained behind in terms of educational development. Historically known simply as Rukum when Nepal had 75 districts, the area was later split into Rukum East and Rukum West after the federal restructuring.
At an elevation of 882 meters, Rukum had a tradition of Gurukul-based education in earlier times. Formal education was once limited to certain castes and families—mainly Brahmins, Mukhiyas, Jimwals, and royal households. During the reign of Rana Prime Minister Dev Shumsher, a primary school was established in Dangdunge (now part of Musikot Municipality) as a language school. Following the fall of the Rana regime, additional schools emerged in the region.
When the National Education System Plan (2028–2032 BS) was introduced, the pace of educational progress in the district began to improve. However, access to higher education remained minimal. It was only after Tribhuvan University was established in 2016 BS that Nepal formally entered the sphere of higher education.
Musikot Khalanga Multiple Campus was founded in 2037 BS, but its reach did not extend to the western parts of the district. Aathbiskot Municipality, located 43 kilometers northwest of the district headquarters, continued to struggle with access. The area's geography and economic limitations posed serious barriers to education. Many students from low-income families cannot afford to study outside their region.
In 2064 BS, classes for Grade 11 and 12 were introduced in Aathbiskot Municipality. While this made learning somewhat easier for local students, those pursuing bachelor’s degrees still faced the same challenges. To address this, a joint initiative by intellectuals, teachers, political parties, businesspeople, students, and local government units was launched. Preparations began in 2067 BS to establish a campus.
On Shrawan 4, 2069 BS, Radijyula Education Campus was officially granted affiliation from the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Planning Division, Tribhuvan University, Kirtipur, Kathmandu, to run a three-year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) program.
After Tribhuvan University introduced a four-year B.Ed. program, the campus started offering both three-year and four-year B.Ed. programs. Today, Radijyula Education Campus remains the only higher education institution in Aathbiskot Municipality and is located in Ward No. 9, Radijyula.
