Amar Neupane’s ‘Seto Dharti’ Begins Staging at Gandharva Theatre in Pokhara
A play based on the novel ‘Seto Dharti’ by fiction writer Amar Neupane, recipient of the Madan Puraskar for 2068 BS, has begun staging at Gandharva Theatre in Pokhara. Following successful performances in Kathmandu and Biratnagar, the play began its Pokhara run on Friday.
Directed by Sundar Dhital, the play will be staged in Pokhara through Monday. Three shows will be held daily at 11:00 AM, 2:00 PM, and 5:00 PM. Kantipur Theatre has previously staged 101 shows of the play in Kathmandu. The one-hour-and-40-minute production sensitively presents serious issues related to child marriage, child widowhood, women’s lives, social structures, and women’s existence.
Pokhara Metropolitan City Mayor Dhanraj Acharya inaugurated the staging of the play. He said ‘Seto Dharti’ represents earlier aspects of Nepali society, culture, and tradition, adding that the play has done linguistic justice by accurately presenting the language and speech style used in Pokhara. He said efforts to bring literary works to life on stage would help the new generation understand Nepali society and also contribute to promoting Pokhara as a city of art, literature, and creativity.
Similarly, fiction writer Amar Neupane said his novel had been presented on stage while maintaining its originality and urged audiences in Pokhara to support the play. The cast includes Gita Bista, Suhana Acharya, Sajana Thapa, Sushmita Shrestha, Adrien Dhamala, Bina Rokka, Biran Dahal, Pratik Chaudhary, Sanskar Chaulagain, and other artists.
In recent years, there has been a growing trend in Nepal of adapting well-known works of fiction and poetry for the stage. Popular works including Laxmi Prasad Devkota’s ‘Muna Madan’, Guru Prasad Mainali’s ‘Kartavya’, Hridaya Chandra Singh Pradhan’s ‘Ek Chihan’, Nayan Raj Pandey’s ‘Lu’, and Parijat’s ‘Shirishko Phool’ have also previously been staged and gained popularity.
