Shailesh Thapa Chhetri Appointed as 28th IGP of Nepal Police:

Shailesh Thapa Chhetri has been promoted to the post of Inspector General of Police (IGP). A minister informed that Thapa, who was number one on the list, was appointed to the post of Inspector General (IG) by the cabinet meeting on, Tuesday (July 7, 2020).

Thapa, who has been appointed as the 28th Inspector General of Nepal Police, will lead the police force for the next 22 months. As per the provisions of the current police regulations, he will be the Inspector General of Police till May 2, 2022 (2079 Baishakh 19). He will retire after 30 years of service.

Shailesh Thapa Chhetri is the son of former Deputy Inspector General of Nepal Police Shambhu Thapa.

On May 1, 1992 (2049 Baishakh 19), 16 inspectors were recruited in the Nepal Police through open competition. In which his name came out in the first number. Since then, he has always been at the forefront of his batch. Rajesh Lal Karna of the same batch was promoted to the number one position in DSP. He was promoted from forensic to service. A graduate of Nepal Commerce Campus, Min Bhawan, Thapa holds a Masters in Political Science from Tribhuvan University. Thapa also graduated from the Nepal Police Academy, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Army Staff College.

Later, Rajesh Lal Karna was promoted to SP in the administration. In SP, Karna was promoted to number one and Dilip Chaudhary to number two, and Shailesh to number three. Chaudhary, who was injured in the Baneshwor movement in 2067 BS, has been promoted under the pressure of the then Congress leader Vijay Kumar Gachchhadar.

However, Shailesh was promoted to number one again in SSP. After that, he was promoted to the number one position in DIG and AIG. Although not political lobbying, his preference became the door to become the Inspector General.

Many police officers have commented that he is one of the few loyal policemen. A police official said, "Some well-known police officers have tarnished their image after becoming IGPs. This is the main challenge for Thapa."

Thapa of Katunje in Bhaktapur was born on July 6, 1968 (2025 Ashad 23). While being a police inspector, he worked at the Police Academy, IGP Secretariat, Sindhupalchowk, and Salyan.

He had worked as Deputy Superintendent in Dhading, Inspector General's Secretariat, and Police Academy. As Superintendent of Police, he led Jhapa and Kaski and also served in the Special Bureau, the Police Academy, and the IGP Secretariat.

After being promoted to Senior Superintendent of Police, he was also in the role of IGP Secretariat and Central Spokesperson. After becoming the Deputy Inspector General, he headed the Metropolitan Police Office and also served as the Central Spokesperson in the IGP Secretariat.

After being promoted to AIG, he has continued in the Department of Human Resources and Administration. His father Shambhu Thapa Chhetri also became the Deputy Inspector General of Nepal Police. For the third time in a row, the government has given the responsibility of leading the organization to those who are at the top of the list.
