Tribhuvan University Holds Residential Faculty Capacity Training in Nagarkot

NAGARKOT — Tribhuvan University’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences has begun a residential “Faculty Capacity Enhancement Training” for teachers of English and Sociology. The workshop started on 2082/11/04 (BS) at Ratnagiri Resort in Nagarkot, Bhaktapur.

Organizers said the selection process prioritized wider participation, with a focus on including as many teachers as possible from outside the Kathmandu Valley. The training targets younger faculty members who, organizers noted, often have fewer opportunities for professional development.

A total of 67 teachers are participating: 35 from the Department of English and 32 from the Department of Sociology. Participants represent constituent campuses as well as central departments.

Inauguration and focus areas

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Deepak Aryal inaugurated the program. In his remarks, he said teachers who maintain direct, continuous engagement with students in the classroom carry a central responsibility for the university’s academic future.

He said the workshop is intended to strengthen teaching methods, support the development of learning materials, and build research and presentation skills. He also acknowledged administrative constraints related to spending capacity within the university and told participants that steps are being planned to address the issue and continue similar training opportunities.

Academic scope and support

At the opening session, Dr. Bamdev Adhikari, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, outlined the program structure. He said the training will include subject-specific methodology discussions and sessions for sharing professional experiences and academic work. He also emphasized the need to update academic activities in line with new curricula and to engage with changes in a wider global context.

Kedar Prasad Acharya, Director of the Planning, Research, and Evaluation Division at the University Grants Commission (UGC), spoke about institutional support for the initiative. He said the World Bank has provided grant support for the training, with the aim of strengthening curricula and academic activities in response to changing labor-market needs. He added that the program is designed to encourage creativity in teaching and research and to promote lifelong learning among faculty.

Remarks and facilitators

The opening program included remarks and best wishes from senior academics, including Dr. Chiranjivi Acharya, Dr. Khomraj Kharel, Head of the Central Department of English Prof. Dr. Dhruba Karki, and Head of the Central Department of Sociology Dr. Pasang Sherpa. Prof. Dr. Binod Pokharel, who was involved in preparing the proposal for the training, also addressed the gathering.
