Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA)

As the Mobile Device Management System (MDMS) implementation date approaches, IMEI registration has resumed due to increased pressure. The regulator Nepal Telecommunication Authority has regularized the IMEI registration of mobiles by resolving the problems seen in the servers.

The Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA), the regulatory body for the telecommunications sector, is launching a mobile device management system from July 16, 2021. After that, the mobile phones brought without paying customs duty will be switched off. However, illegal mobile blocking will not start immediately.

Due to the incomplete preparation of MDMS, it will take some more time. According to the NTA, the telecom service provider's system also needs to be integrated. This means that it may take another two to three months to block illegal mobiles.

For the time being, the required system has been set up at the National Information Technology Center inside Singha Durbar. Initially, the NTA will turn on the system from July 16. In which the entire record of mobiles entering Nepal will be kept.

As the customs department has access to the system, it will decide whether the mobile imported from abroad has type approval (approval from regulatory NTA before importing the device) and whether the mobile equipment identity (IMEI) is registered or not.

At the same time, unregistered mobiles will be banned from this system. It is said that it will automatically stop illegally imported mobiles. When the system is fully operational, the system will begin blocking illegal mobile phones.
