Nepal Government Public Holidays and Office Hours for BS 2083 [सार्वजिनक विदा]

The Government of Nepal has decided to determine public holidays (Sarbajanik Bida), festival holidays, substitute holidays, and office hours for all government offices and public bodies for one year from April 14, 2026 to April 13, 2027 [2083 Baisakh 1 to 2083 Chaitra end (BS)]. This notice is published accordingly.

Nepali Diplomatic Missions Abroad

Nepali missions abroad may manage and adjust public holidays on their own, up to a maximum of 18 days, considering the public holidays of the host country.

Special Provisions for Public Service Delivery

Required arrangements for service delivery on specified holidays

On the holidays listed below, the relevant ministry or body must make necessary arrangements to provide the public services stated in Section 10.1:

Covered holidays include:

  • Selected nationwide festival holidays listed under Section 2.1: Chandi Purnima (Ubhauli), Raksha Bandhan, Shri Krishna Janmashtami, Ghatasthapana, Dhanya Purnima (Udhauli/Yomari Punhi/Jyapu Day), Christmas Day, Tamu Lhosar, Maghi (Maghe Sankranti), Sonam Lhosar, Maha Shivaratri, Gyalpo Lhosar, Eid (Eid al-Fitr), and Bakra Eid (Eid al-Adha)

  • Jatra holidays listed under Section 5: Gaijatra, Indra Jatra, Matsyendranath Bhoto Dekhaune Jatra, and Ghode Jatra

  • Selected public day holidays listed under Section 6.1: Republic Day, Martyrs’ Day, National Democracy Day, and International Women’s Day

  • Birthday holidays listed under Section 7.1: Buddha Jayanti and Prithvi Jayanti (National Unity Day)

Services to be ensured:

(a) Citizenship-related services

(b) Passport-related services

(c) Consular services

(d) Customs and revenue services (including revenue investigation)

(e) Quarantine services

(f) Transport management services including driving licences, vehicle registration, and renewals

(g) Industry, commerce, and company administration services

(h) Foreign employment services

(i) National identity card and civil registration services

(j) Land revenue (Malpot) and survey (Napi) services

(k) Public services delivered by local levels

(l) Veterinary services

(m) Drinking water services

(n) Electricity services

(o) Road and sewer repair and maintenance services

(p) Food quality testing

(q) Examination-related work conducted by various bodies and educational institutions

(r) Foreign study permission (NOC) services

(s) Police character certificate services

(t) Other public services as designated by the relevant ministry or body

(u) Other public service delivery services designated by provincial governments and local levels

(v) Banking and insurance transactions

Daily and emergency service continuity

Ministries, departments, and offices providing daily and emergency services must ensure uninterrupted service delivery even on public holidays. This includes hospitals, telecommunications, police, immigration, prisons, waste management, fire brigade, mint, public service broadcasting institutions, the Department of Printing, postal services, peace and security services, and disaster-related services.

Substitute leave for essential service staff

Offices operating essential and emergency services under Sections 10.1 and 10.2 must arrange substitute leave on a roster basis for employees working on holidays.

Office Hours

  • For all government offices across Nepal:

    • Baisakh 1 to Kartik 15 (BS) [April 14 to November 1, 2026] and Magh 16 to Chaitra end (BS) [January 30 to April 13, 2027]: 10:00 am to 5:00 pm

    • Kartik 16 to Magh 15 (BS) [November 2, 2026 to January 29, 2027]: 10:00 am to 4:00 pm

  • On Fridays: 10:00 am to 3:00 pm

Management of Essential and Emergency Services

Considering essential services under the Essential Services Operation Act, 2014 (BS), and other emergency service arrangements, each district must form a committee chaired by the Chief District Officer to ensure such services operate smoothly even on public holidays.

The committee shall include the Medical Superintendent or District Public Health Chief, the District Coordination Officer, and the District Police Chief as members, with the Assistant Chief District Officer serving as Member-Secretary.

Essential services include:

  • Telegraph or telephone services

  • Transportation services for carrying passengers or goods by water, land, or air routes

  • Services related to airport or aircraft care, operation, or maintenance

  • Services related to loading, storing, unloading, or stacking goods at an air ground, railway station, or government warehouse

  • Printing or government press services

  • Any Government of Nepal defence-related service connected to producing, storing, distributing arms, ammunition, treasury, or other military supplies

  • Any other service designated by the Government of Nepal by publishing a notice in the Nepal Gazette

Notes

(a) In addition to public holidays decided by the Government of Nepal, federal government offices located within a province shall also observe up to 6 days of public holidays declared by the provincial government, considering the province’s religion, culture, and customs. If a province declares more than 6 days of public holidays applicable across the province, and for the three districts of Kathmandu Valley, the matter shall be as decided by the Government of Nepal, Council of Ministers.

(b) After provincial public holidays applicable across the province are published in the Provincial Gazette at the beginning of the year, the District Administration Office in the district where the provincial capital is located must confirm which 6 days will apply to federal offices in that province and send an advance request to the Ministry of Home Affairs for public holiday implementation.

(c) “Half day” means up to 1:30 pm for the period Baisakh 1 to Kartik 15 (BS) [April 14 to November 1, 2026] and Magh 16 to Chaitra end (BS) [January 30 to April 13, 2027], and up to 1:00 pm for the period Kartik 16 to Magh 15 (BS) [November 2, 2026 to January 29, 2027].

(d) Lunch time will be from 1:30 pm to 2:00 pm.
