Established in 1959, the Central Department of Economics (CEDECON), Tribhuvan University holds a prestigious position as one of the oldest and largest departments at Tribhuvan University (TU). Going beyond its role as a teaching faculty, CEDECON actively engages in research and publication endeavors, solidifying its reputation as a hub of academic and professional contributions within and beyond Nepal.

With a dedicated team of nineteen faculty members, including eight Professors, four Associate Professors, and seven Lecturers, CEDECON boasts a highly specialized group of educators. Additionally, a team of nine support staff members ensures the smooth functioning of the department. The faculty members are recognized for their remarkable expertise and hold advanced degrees, including Ph.D.s from renowned institutions in the USA, India, and Nepal. Some faculty members also possess Master's degrees in Economics from esteemed universities in the USA, UK, Australia, India, and Nepal. The diverse academic backgrounds of the faculty contribute to the department's enriched learning environment.

A Respected Academic Institution

CEDECON offers a comprehensive range of twenty-eight courses at the Master's level, comprising both compulsory and optional papers, including the completion of a thesis. Students who successfully complete the prescribed courses over four semesters (two years) are awarded the Degree of Master of Arts (M.A.) in Economics. The department is also proud to administer the Ph.D. program initiated by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at TU. Furthermore, CEDECON introduced the M.Phil. program in 2007, further expanding its academic offerings.

Driving Curriculum Excellence

The Economics Subject Committee, led by the Chairman of CEDECON, serves as the apex body responsible for designing and implementing economics curricula across all levels of higher education. With the approval of the Faculty Board under the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Subject Committee annually reviews the curriculum. This ensures necessary improvements and adjustments are made every five years, keeping the curriculum aligned with the dynamic economic landscape.
