Overview
Myanglung Campus, Terhathum, is the only UGC-recognized community campus in the Terhathum district. It is located in Myanglung municipality, ward no. 10, Tamphula, in the eastern part of Nepal. It is affiliated with Tribhuvan University and was established in 2038 B.S.
As a public campus, it provides higher education to meet the growing demands of the students of Tehrathum and other neighboring districts. With a reputed history of nearly four decades, MCT is struggling wholeheartedly for academic excellence. The campus started with the PCL level.
It has started programs such as BA, B.Ed., BBS, MA, M.Ed., and +2, under Education, Humanities, and Management.
MCT has completed the cycle of Scheme "C" of the Second Higher Education Program (SHEP) and is continuing different programs of the Higher Education Reform Project (HERP).
To get a QAA certificate, it has completed the Pre-Visit cycle of Accreditation and is undertaking the remaining accreditation process. The campus is dedicated to providing quality education to produce efficient human resources.
Historical Background
The first and the only one college established in Tehrathum was Birendra Inter College. It was established in 2017 BS at Chuhandada of Aatharai VDC of the Tehrathum district. At present, it is known as the Tehrathum Campus, the constituent campus of Tribhuvan University. Chuhandada is a remote place located about 80 km from Myanglung. It was compulsory to establish another campus as this campus could not provide equal access to all district students.
Therefore, the concerned people of Myanglung and surrounding areas initiated the establishment of a campus at the district headquarters, Myanglung. However, Tribhuvan University had no policy of providing affiliation to run a campus, even if the process of establishing a campus did not stop there. Those concerned people of Myanglung started a donation collection campaign in 2035 BS with the motto to develop a higher education institute. Many people agreed to donate to this work.
The people of Myanglung pleaded with the then-King Birendra to establish a campus during his visits to Dhankuta and Tehrathum. To continue the process, a delegation team was formed. This team requested the then-Education Minister, Pashupati Shumser Rana, but he denied it.
Tribhuvan University started to provide affiliation to establish campuses at the local level. After that, people of the district panchayat, students, guardians, and politicians united to get affiliation. The team met the Vice-Chancellor, but he also denied the request. Then, the team decided to reach the Chancellor, the then-King Birendra. The King considered the request and ordered that temporary affiliation be provided. In this way, Myanglung Campus was formally established in 2038 BS.
It was established with only one Humanities and Social Science faculty member and ran only the Proficiency Certificate Level.
As it is located at the district headquarters, local people and educational experts realized the need for the Bachelor's level classes to be imparted from this institute. Therefore, MCT started the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) courses since Academic Year (AY) 2048/049. To address the demands of students and stakeholders, MCT added other streams and levels. In this context, MCT started classes in the Bachelor of Education program in 2057/058 and the Bachelor of Business Studies program in 2064/065. Similarly, Master's Level classes have also been run since AY 2066/067 and AY 2067/068, respectively. MCT started to run classes of +2 in three faculties since AY 2052/053.
Since its establishment, Myanglung Campus has successfully imparted higher education to the district's poor, disadvantaged, and needy people. The products of this campus have positively contributed to the strata of society. The tendency to go out of the district for higher education has also been reduced to a great extent. Myanglung Campus has opened the door to higher education for those who are disadvantaged and poor and wish to join HEI but cannot afford to pay for it outside of their district.
Despite being able to contribute a lot to the field of education, it has been facing many problems. The campus's main income source is its students' fees, financial aid from local sources, and grants from the UGC. However, it is still insufficient to run the campus smoothly. Therefore, it has been facing serious financial challenges. The campus has to overcome the problem anyway. In search of ways to mitigate financial difficulties and ensure quality education, it has participated in different programs run by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
Myanglung Campus completed the SHEP cycle. After SHEP, this campus was selected for the Higher Education Reform Project (HERP). Moreover, the campus completed the programs under resource mobilization from 2016 to 2018. UGC has also provided a ‘no-objection letter’ for the programs under resource mobilization for 2019.
The campus is continuously struggling to get QAA certification. It has submitted its SSR report to the QAA Department of UGC, and the pre-visit team has monitored the campus. The team has made some recommendations to improve educational and infrastructural inadequacies. As the team suggested, Myanglung Campus has been improving in different aspects.
