Bachelor of Technical Education in Mechanical Engineering (B. Tech Ed) at BTI, Butwal

Butwal Technical Institute (BTI) has added another important chapter to its six-decade-long legacy. With the aim of producing high-level human resources in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector, BTI is running the Bachelor of Technical Education in Mechanical Engineering (B. Tech Ed) program in collaboration with Kathmandu University (Kathmandu University – KU) School of Education.
This program is based on a distinctive and new academic model in Nepal, producing graduates who have the qualities of both an “engineer” and an “instructor.”

Model: This program combines “Vocational Pedagogy” and “Core Engineering Skills.”
Why Study This Course?
This course is different and special compared to traditional engineering (B.E.). Its main purpose is to address the shortage of “instructors” and “middle-level managers” seen in Nepal’s technical institutes and industries.
Dual competence: Students do not only learn how to operate machines; they also learn “teaching methodology,” meaning how to teach others.
Career opportunities:

Technical Instructor: To become a higher-level instructor in hundreds of institutes under CTEVT.

Industrial Manager: To work in industry as a floor supervisor or training manager.

Higher education: After this course, students can pursue Master’s studies in engineering or technical education management in Nepal or abroad.
Eligibility Criteria
To enroll in this program, the following academic qualifications are required:

10+2 (Science) or equivalent: Must have passed 10+2 in science from a recognized institution, with a minimum CGPA of 1.8 or equivalent marks.

Diploma in Engineering: Must have completed a 3-year diploma in Mechanical Engineering or a related field (minimum second division).

Selection process: Applicants must pass the entrance exam and interview conducted by Kathmandu University or BTI.
Course Structure
This 136-credit-hour course is mainly divided into four parts:
A) Vocational Specialization (80 Credits)

This covers subjects such as communication skills, leadership development, and computer applications.
D) Research and Internship (18 Credits)
In the final year, students must complete a long-term internship (OJT) by working in an industry or in a technical institute. They must also complete a practical research project (Project Work).
Fee Structure and Scholarship
Fees: The fee for this course is determined as per Kathmandu University standards. Since BTI is a community institution, the fee may be somewhat concessional compared to other private engineering colleges. (For exact fees, students must contact the administration during admission; generally, it can be estimated around NPR 8 to 10 lakhs.)
Scholarship: A certain percentage of scholarships is arranged for hardworking and financially disadvantaged students. Priority is given especially to female students and students from remote areas.

BTI’s own workshop is considered among the best in Nepal. B. Tech Ed students at BTI can immediately practice what they learn in books in BTI’s machine shop, welding section, and hydropower lab. The “learning and teaching” environment found here is rarely available elsewhere.
