Butwal Technical Institute (BTI - बुटवल प्राविधिक शिक्षालय) is a reputed technical education institution located in western Nepal. The institute is situated in Lumbini Province, Rupandehi District, Butwal Sub-Metropolitan City Ward No. 4, Laxminagar, on Odd Hofton Street.

Historical Background

A Response to a Real Need
In the late 1950s, the United Mission to Nepal (UMN) planned to build a mission hospital in Tansen, Palpa. Norwegian engineer Odd Hoftun came to Nepal with responsibility for constructing the hospital.
During the construction, Hoftun faced a serious problem: skilled technical manpower needed for the work (craftsmen, welders, electricians, plumbers) was not available locally. Even for small technical tasks, there was a compulsion to bring workers from India or look toward Kathmandu.
This shortage planted a new idea in Hoftun’s mind. He understood that Nepal’s development could not be sustained only by constructing hospital or school buildings; Nepal needed to train its own youth with technical skills. He also saw Nepal’s vast hydropower potential and the need for local youth with knowledge of hydropower technology to utilize it.
The Birth of BTI (1963)
After completing the construction of the Tansen hospital, Hoftun focused on Butwal. At that time, Butwal was only a small market connecting the Tarai and the hills. However, Hoftun saw the flow of the Tinau River and the potential for Butwal to become a future industrial center.
In 1963, under an agreement between UMN and the Government of Nepal, Butwal Technical Institute (BTI) was established. This was a new experiment in Nepal’s history. It was not a traditional school where students sat on benches and copied what was written on the blackboard.
It was a “Factory-School,” where learning and production took place side by side.
The Rise of Butwal Power Company and Other Institutions
BTI’s history cannot be separated from Butwal Power Company (BPC), Himal Hydro, and Nepal Hydro and Electric (NHE). To provide employment to BTI-trained manpower and mobilize their skills in nation-building, these institutions were established under the leadership of Odd Hoftun.
BTI-trained apprentices built the Tinau Hydropower Project (1 MW), which is among Nepal’s first hydropower projects constructed by digging a tunnel. In this way, BTI became not only an educational institution but also an “incubator” for Nepal’s hydropower development.
