What is BASLP?

BASLP combines the study of hearing, speech, language, communication, assessment, rehabilitation, and related health sciences.

Audiology focuses on hearing and auditory function. Speech-language pathology addresses communication difficulties involving speech, language, voice, fluency, and related disorders. The program brings these areas together so that students learn how hearing and communication problems are identified, assessed, managed, and rehabilitated.

Students also study the medical sciences connected with speech and hearing. This helps them understand the relationship between communication disorders, auditory health, human anatomy and physiology, and medical conditions that may require referral to an ENT or another medical service.

The course also includes community-oriented professional practice, giving students an academic foundation for rehabilitation and hearing or communication services beyond individual clinical assessment.

Course Duration and Academic Structure

Duration: 4 years

The BASLP program is organized across four academic years.

The first year introduces communication, hearing, basic medical sciences, linguistics, acoustics, psychology, and statistics. The second year moves into diagnostic and therapeutic subjects. The third year covers advanced speech-language and audiology areas together with community-oriented professional practice.

The fourth year consists of internship.

This sequence allows students to develop their foundation before progressing to assessment, therapeutic methods, rehabilitation, assistive devices, and practical professional learning.

BASLP Curriculum

First Year

The first year introduces the scientific, communication, and behavioral foundations required for later professional study.

Subjects include:

  • Human communication, speech-language development and disorders
  • Introduction to audiology
  • Basic medical sciences related to speech and hearing
  • Introduction to linguistics
  • Basic acoustics and electronics
  • Psychology related to speech and hearing
  • Basic statistics

Human communication and speech-language development introduce the processes involved in communication and the disorders that can affect them.

Introduction to audiology establishes the foundation for understanding hearing and auditory assessment. Basic medical sciences connect speech and hearing with the relevant human biological systems.

Linguistics supports the study of language structure, while acoustics and electronics provide concepts needed for understanding sound and hearing-related equipment. Psychology and statistics support behavioral understanding and academic analysis.

Second Year

The second year moves more directly into assessment and intervention.

Students study:

  • Speech-language diagnostics and therapeutics
  • Articulation and phonological disorders
  • Voice and laryngectomy
  • Diagnostic audiology
  • Amplification and assistive devices for the hearing impaired
  • Educational audiology
  • Research methods

Speech-language diagnostics and therapeutics introduce assessment and intervention principles. Articulation and phonological disorders focus on difficulties involving speech sound production and organization.

Voice and laryngectomy address voice-related conditions and communication needs associated with laryngeal conditions.

Diagnostic audiology develops hearing-assessment knowledge, while amplification and assistive devices introduce the use of hearing aids and related support technologies.

Educational audiology addresses hearing-related needs in learning environments. Research methods introduces students to structured academic investigation.

Third Year

The third year covers more advanced communication and hearing disorders.

Subjects include:

  • Fluency and its disorders
  • Neurogenic language disorders in adults
  • Rehabilitative audiology
  • Neuromotor speech disorders
  • Noise measurement and hearing conservation
  • Pediatric audiology
  • Community-oriented professional practices

Fluency-related study covers disorders affecting the smooth flow of speech. Neurogenic language disorders address communication difficulties associated with neurological conditions in adults.

Neuromotor speech disorders focus on speech problems linked with motor control, while rehabilitative audiology deals with support for people experiencing hearing impairment.

Pediatric audiology introduces hearing assessment and management in children. Noise measurement and hearing conservation address the effects of noise and approaches to protecting hearing.

Community-oriented professional practices extend the course beyond individual clinical work to community-based hearing, communication, and rehabilitation needs.

Fourth Year

The fourth year is dedicated to internship.

Internship provides practical exposure after completion of the major academic subjects in audiology and speech-language pathology.

It allows students to apply knowledge related to hearing assessment, speech-language evaluation, rehabilitation, assistive devices, communication disorders, and professional interaction in practical settings.

What Students Learn to Do

The BASLP program develops competencies across hearing, speech, language, communication, and rehabilitation.

Graduates are trained to:

  • identify speech-language and auditory complaints;
  • evaluate hearing status;
  • assess aural health;
  • recognize aural signs associated with common systemic diseases;
  • assess hearing-aid requirements;
  • prescribe and fit appropriate hearing aids within professional scope;
  • identify situations requiring medical or ENT referral;
  • work with speech-language assessment and therapeutic approaches;
  • address articulation, phonological, voice, fluency, and related communication disorders;
  • contribute to community-based rehabilitation;
  • support people using cochlear implants in audiological matters; and
  • provide auditory-verbal therapy for children with cochlear implants within the training framework.

The program also develops knowledge of pediatric audiology, educational audiology, hearing conservation, research methods, communication development, and assistive devices.

Eligibility for BASLP

Eligibility: Applicants must meet the prevailing bachelor-level academic requirements for BASLP and the admission conditions prescribed under the Medical Education Commission framework.

Academic pathways include Grade 12 Science, A-Level or equivalent study with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

Specified health-science diploma or proficiency-certificate pathways may also qualify where the required science background, equivalence, academic standard, and applicable professional council registration conditions are satisfied.

The academic criteria include the prescribed minimum marks or CGPA for the relevant qualifying route. Admission remains subject to the prevailing requirements applicable to the relevant Medical Education Commission admission cycle.

MECEE-BL Admission Process

Admission to BASLP at Maharajgunj Medical Campus is based on the Medical Education Common Entrance Examination for Bachelor Level (MECEE-BL).

The national admission framework is administered by the Medical Education Commission.

Candidates must satisfy the applicable academic eligibility and entrance requirements before taking part in the admission and matching process.

Admission follows the prevailing MEC provisions concerning:

  • entrance examination;
  • merit;
  • matching and institutional placement;
  • seat allocation;
  • scholarship provisions;
  • admission categories; and
  • admission procedures.

Seat allocation is determined through the MEC process and can vary between admission cycles. Scholarship arrangements and other admission provisions also follow the rules applicable to the relevant intake.

Internship and Practical Learning

Internship forms the entire fourth year of the BASLP program.

By this stage, students have already studied diagnostic audiology, speech-language diagnostics and therapeutics, hearing amplification, educational audiology, rehabilitative audiology, pediatric audiology, communication disorders, and community-oriented practice.

The internship provides the setting in which these areas can be connected with supervised professional practice.

The academic progression from foundational sciences through assessment and rehabilitation before internship is designed to prepare students for practical work involving people with hearing and communication difficulties.

Professional Registration and Licensing

BASLP is an allied health profession regulated through the Nepal Health Professional Council (NHPC).

Academic graduation and professional registration are separate stages. After completing the required BASLP education, graduates must meet the applicable NHPC licensing and registration requirements before entering professional practice under the council's regulatory framework.

Students should therefore understand the pathway as:

  1. admission through the applicable MEC entrance and matching process;
  2. completion of the four-year BASLP program, including internship; and
  3. completion of the applicable NHPC licensing and professional registration requirements.

Course Completion Period

Students are required to complete all BASLP subjects within the permitted academic period.

The course framework applies an exit-barrier provision under which students must pass all subjects within the normal course duration plus four additional years from the beginning of the academic session.

This requirement places a defined maximum period on completion of the academic program.
