B Pharm is structured to develop knowledge and professional competence in the scientific and practical aspects of pharmacy.
The program covers medicines from several perspectives: their chemical properties, biological effects, formulation, production, quality assessment, storage, distribution, clinical use, and management within pharmacy services.
Students begin with subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacognosy, Pharmaceutical Microbiology, and Mathematics. The course then progresses into Pharmaceutics, Pharmacology, Biopharmaceutics and Pharmacokinetics, Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Analysis, Quality Assurance, Clinical and Hospital Pharmacy, Industrial Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Jurisprudence, and Pharmacotherapeutics.
The curriculum also includes Biostatistics and Research Methodology, giving students an academic foundation for pharmaceutical research and evidence-based professional work.
Duration: 4 years
The program is divided into four academic years.
The first year establishes basic medical, biological, chemical, and pharmaceutical science foundations. The second year moves into physical pharmacy, pharmacology, drug disposition, pharmacognosy, medicinal chemistry, and pharmacy management.
The third year develops knowledge of formulation, pharmaceutical engineering, drug analysis, quality assurance, medicinal chemistry, and research methodology.
The fourth year places greater emphasis on professional pharmacy practice, pharmaceutical law, hospital and clinical pharmacy, industrial pharmacy, quality assurance, and pharmacotherapeutics.
The first year builds the scientific foundation required for later pharmaceutical study.
Subjects include:
Anatomy, Physiology, and Pathology introduce students to the human body and disease processes. Biochemistry supports the understanding of biological chemical processes.
Pharmaceutical Inorganic and Organic Chemistry provide the chemical basis for studying medicinal substances, while Pharmacognosy introduces naturally derived pharmaceutical materials. Pharmaceutical Microbiology connects microbiological principles with pharmacy and medicines.
The second year introduces several core professional pharmacy subjects:
Physical Pharmacy addresses principles relevant to pharmaceutical systems and dosage forms. Pharmacology develops understanding of how medicines act in biological systems.
Biopharmaceutics and Pharmacokinetics deal with drug availability and the movement of medicines through the body. Medicinal Chemistry links chemical structure with medicinal properties.
Pharmaceutical Management introduces organizational and management aspects of pharmacy services.
The third year develops pharmaceutical production, formulation, analysis, and research knowledge.
Subjects include:
Pharmaceutical Engineering introduces processes associated with pharmaceutical production.
Dosage Forms and Formulation addresses the development and preparation of pharmaceutical products, while Pharmaceutical Analysis and Quality Assurance introduces methods used to examine medicines and maintain expected quality standards.
Biostatistics and Research Methodology support structured pharmaceutical research and the interpretation of scientific information.
The final year concentrates on professional, clinical, industrial, regulatory, and therapeutic aspects of pharmacy.
Students study:
Social Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Jurisprudence connect pharmacy practice with social responsibilities and the legal framework affecting medicines and pharmaceutical services.
Clinical and Hospital Pharmacy addresses pharmacy work within healthcare settings. Pharmacotherapeutics develops understanding of medicines in the management of health conditions.
Industrial Pharmacy and advanced Quality Assurance extend learning into pharmaceutical production and product-quality systems.
The program aims to prepare pharmacy graduates for responsibilities in community and hospital pharmacy, pharmaceutical technology, research, pharmaceutical service management, and other scientific areas of pharmacy.
The curriculum develops competence in activities including:
The program also emphasizes working as part of a multiprofessional healthcare team and applying scientific pharmacy knowledge to professional responsibilities.
Quality assessment is an important part of the B Pharm curriculum.
Students study Pharmaceutical Analysis and Quality Assurance in both the third and fourth years. Pharmaceutical Engineering, dosage-form formulation, and Industrial Pharmacy provide additional knowledge related to pharmaceutical manufacturing and production processes.
The competencies associated with the program include monitoring quality-assurance systems, examining drug manufacturing and storage conditions, and understanding drug handling, distribution, and record keeping.
The curriculum also refers to Good Manufacturing Practice within pharmaceutical industry responsibilities.
Clinical and Hospital Pharmacy is included in the final year, while Pharmacology, Biopharmaceutics and Pharmacokinetics, and Pharmacotherapeutics provide supporting knowledge across the program.
Graduates are expected to understand medicine use in clinical settings, drug interactions, incompatibilities, patient counseling, drug information, and hospital pharmacy management.
The program therefore does not treat pharmacy only as pharmaceutical manufacturing. It also addresses the use, management, dispensing, and communication of medicines within healthcare services.
Eligibility: Applicants may qualify through the academic routes prescribed for the program.
These include:
Specified health-science diploma routes may also apply where candidates meet the required Physics, Chemistry, and Biology standard, obtain Grade 12 Science equivalence, and hold registration with the concerned professional council.
Admission remains subject to the prevailing eligibility and admission rules applied to the relevant Medical Education Commission intake.
Admission to B Pharm is conducted through the Medical Education Common Entrance Examination for Bachelor Level (MECEE-BL).
The admission framework is administered by the Medical Education Commission.
Candidates must meet the applicable academic requirements and qualify through the entrance and matching process for the relevant admission cycle.
The MEC framework governs matters including:
Seat numbers, scholarship allocation, matching procedures, and examination guidelines may change between admission cycles according to MEC decisions and the applicable official calendar.
Students enrolled in B Pharm must complete all required subjects within the permitted academic period.
The curriculum applies an exit-barrier provision under which students must pass all subjects within the normal four-year course duration plus four additional years from the beginning of the academic session.
This establishes a defined maximum period for completion of the program.
Pharmacy professional registration in Nepal is handled through the Nepal Pharmacy Council.
Academic graduation and professional registration are separate stages. After completing the B Pharm qualification, graduates must meet the applicable Nepal Pharmacy Council name-registration examination and registration requirements before entering professional pharmacy practice under the council's regulatory framework.
The pathway therefore includes:
