Course Overview

The PCL in General Medicine is a three-year yearly-system program under CTEVT. Its curriculum title is Proficiency Certificate Level in General Medicine, and it is designed to prepare middle-level medical personnel for general medicine and primary health service responsibilities. The course covers patient assessment, provisional diagnosis, referral decisions, medication and treatment support, counselling, routine and special medical investigations, minor medical and surgical procedures, emergency case handling, medical records, health post work, and community health responsibilities. Eligibility and Admission

For SEE or equivalent examinations under the letter grading system, applicants must have passed with compulsory English, Mathematics, and Science and secured a minimum overall GPA of 2.0 out of 4.0. Applicants from the relevant Technical SLC stream must have obtained 68.33 percent marks.

For examinations before the letter grading system, applicants must have passed SLC or equivalent with compulsory Mathematics, English, and Science in at least second division or secured 45 percent marks in total. Students who passed SLC and the relevant Technical SLC must have obtained 68.33 percent marks. Applicants must also pass the entrance examination administered by CTEVT.

Academic Structure

The course combines theory, practical, lab, clinical, and field-based learning. Major study areas include Medicine I and Gynecology, Surgery I, Basic Medical Procedures and First Aid, Clinical Pathology, Pharmacology and Pharmacy, Environmental Health, Health Education, Primary Health Care and Family Health, Medicine II, Surgery II, Health Management, Epidemiology and Community Diagnosis, Comprehensive Clinical Practicum, and Comprehensive Community Field Practicum.

The medium of instruction is English and/or Nepali. Students need at least 90 percent attendance in each subject to appear in the respective final examination.

Examination, Certificate, and Licensing

The evaluation system includes internal assessment and final examinations. Students must pass both theory and practical components. The minimum pass mark is 40 percent in theory and 50 percent in practical. Students who complete all components of all subjects across the three years are awarded the Proficiency Certificate Level in General Medicine.
