Students of Saraswati Secondary School in Biratnagar-9 showcased culinary skills at their school. They cooked and served foods ranging from cultural dishes to “fast food.”
The school is preparing to run Hotel Management classes from the next academic session. For that purpose, the school provided practical culinary learning to students from Grades 5 to 12.
Principal Anita Nepal said that students had also received culinary-related training in the past. She stated that this time the school has prepared a pre-vocational course and has moved forward with preparations to run Hotel Management classes in Grades 11 and 12 from the next academic session.
To increase students’ interest, the school formed 13 groups and organized the culinary showcase, she said.
In the school premises, students cooked and served pakoda, achar, panipuri, chatpate, samosa, pakoda, tea, idli, jhalmuri, juice, khirpuri, alu nimki, burger, sandwich, bread, nimki, carrot halwa, aluchaat, yomari, selroti, vegetarian momo, dalpuri, paneer, vegetables, and other items.
Principal Nepal said the students raised money themselves to arrange the food ingredients, and the school supported them. She said, “For this, the students collected money themselves and prepared the food items themselves; the school provided some support only in the cooking.”
She added that the students displayed their own skills, sold the cooked food to their classmates as snacks, and exchanged experiences by tasting one another’s food.
She said such activities have increased students’ encouragement in culinary skills.
Various stakeholders, including Ramprasad Dhungel, Chief of the Education Administration Division of Biratnagar Metropolitan City, tasted the foods prepared by the students and monitored the event.
