Devkota’s 117th Birth Anniversary Observed in Kathmandu

Modern Kanya Multiple College, Kathmandu, organized a program today to commemorate the 117th birth anniversary of Mahakavi Laxmi Prasad Devkota. The program featured poetry recitations, cultural presentations, a discussion forum, and various other activities.

The chief guest, senior litterateur and former Chair of the Nepal Literary Journalists’ Association, Rochak Ghimire, commented on Devkota’s stylistic qualities, the human emotions present in his literature, social consciousness, and international influence. He said, “In Devkota’s works, humanity, love of nature, and a spirit of rebellion are deeply reflected. His literature has not only enriched Nepali letters but has also introduced Nepal on the international stage.”

Remarks by the Distinguished Guest and Other Speakers

The distinguished guest, senior writer Dr. Ram Prasad Dahal, reviewed Devkota’s literary journey from childhood to his later years and provided literary critiques of several noted works.

Dinesh Raj Pant, an Academician at the Nepal Academy, writer Rameshmohan Bhattarai, and other speakers discussed diverse facets of Devkota’s poetry, essays, epics, and critical writings.

All speakers emphasized that Devkota is an extraordinary name not only in the Nepali language but also in world literature.

Student Recitations and Cultural Presentations

College students recited well-known works such as “Paagal,” “Muna Madan,” and “Yetipani Marchu Bhane Kasari Banchu.” The cultural segment included Deusi dance and vocal performances reflecting Nepali identity.

Acknowledgment from the College

Principal Sagun Pokharel expressed gratitude to all guests and encouraged students to internalize the ideals and literary values of the Mahakavi. Modern Kanya Multiple College has been organizing literary activities each year on the occasion of Devkota’s birth anniversary.

According to the college administration, this year’s program was conducted in a more organized, enriched, and multidimensional manner.

About Laxmi Prasad Devkota

Devkota was born on B.S. 1966 Kartik Krishna Aunsi, the day of Laxmi Puja, in Dillibazar, Kathmandu. He began writing poetry at the age of ten.

He made significant contributions to the global promotion of Nepali literature through translations of Nepali works into foreign languages and by representing Nepal at various international conferences.

In B.S. 1997, Devkota selected essays by fifteen prose writers of English literature—such as Francis Bacon and Charles Lamb—and published the collection “Prasiddha Prabandha Sangraha.”
