Classes Begin at Geetamata School in Dallu for 150 Students Displaced by Bhotekoshi Flood
A total of 150 students displaced from Rasuwa due to flooding in the Bhotekoshi River have been enrolled at Geetamata Secondary School in Dallu, Kathmandu, where their classes have begun. Arrangements for their education have been made in coordination with Kathmandu Metropolitan City.
The students, who were displaced by the flood and rescued from Rasuwa, are currently staying at Gosok Gumba in Nagarjun Municipality–2 and will commute to the school from there. More than 500 displaced people, ranging from children to elderly people, are taking shelter at the Gumba.
Students from Early Childhood Development (ECD) classes through Grade 10 have joined the school. In coordination with various organizations, the Metropolitan City has provided the students with educational materials, including books, notebooks, uniforms, and bags. Principal Harikrishna Shrestha said the Metropolitan City itself would also arrange the teachers required for this purpose.
According to Principal Shrestha, 60 students attended the school on the first day. He said that, to help shift the students’ attention toward their studies, they were not questioned about the flood and landslides and were instead engaged only in recreational and play activities. If the government later introduces an integrated package and plans to accommodate them elsewhere, or if the students themselves wish to study elsewhere, they will be allowed to do so.
Meanwhile, the government is preparing to begin regular classes only after providing psychosocial counseling to the flood-affected students. The government considers it necessary to understand their psychosocial condition before classes begin, as the flood may have caused fear, panic, stress, and other psychosocial effects among the students.
