Health Ministry Issues Nipah Virus Vigilance Appeal

The Government of Nepal, Ministry of Health and Population has urged the general public to remain alert, stating that Nipah virus (Nipah Virus) cases have been reported in a neighboring country.
Although the World Health Organization has assessed the public health risk to be low globally and in the South-East Asia region, the Ministry said it has begun preparedness measures in view of the neighboring country’s cases.
Preparedness and testing algorithm
The Ministry’s Epidemiology and Disease Control Division has alerted health institutions and bodies across the country.
It also informed that an interim Nipah virus testing algorithm has been prepared.
The Ministry clarified that, so far, no Nipah virus cases have been confirmed in Nepal, and that health bodies are fully prepared to reduce risk.
Possible transmission routes
The Ministry stated that infection may spread through consumption of fruits contaminated by the saliva, urine, or feces of infected fruit bats.
It also noted the risk of transmission through an infected person’s blood, saliva, urine, close contact, and through bats to pigs and then to humans.
Symptoms and when to seek help
The Ministry has urged people to immediately contact the nearest health facility or call 1115 if symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle pain, dizziness, cough, difficulty breathing, and vomiting appear.
In severe cases, problems such as loss of consciousness or becoming unconscious may also occur.
Prevention measures
The Ministry has advised the following measures to reduce infection risk:

Wash fruits thoroughly before eating.

Cook vegetables properly.

Drink only clean and safe water after boiling it.

Use a mask in crowded places.

Keep animal sheds and farms clean.

Use gloves and a mask when cutting meat.

Wash hands regularly with soap and water and follow public health standards.
