To promote preventive health education among schoolchildren, Kathmandu Mahanagarpalika (Kathmandu Metropolitan City) has decided to run the ‘Sana Daktar Karyakram’ in community schools.
It has been stated that, through this program, students studying in schools will be trained on health-related topics and developed as health ambassadors. According to the Mahanagarpalika, the program aims to increase health awareness among the students themselves, their families, and the community.
According to Medical Officer Dr. Dibash Nyaupane of the Mahanagarpalika Swasthya Bibhag, training will be provided in 5 topics: personal hygiene and cleanliness, nutrition, lifestyle and non-communicable diseases, communicable diseases and antimicrobial resistance, and first aid and safety as well as mental health and leadership.
The program will be implemented in 4 community schools in the first phase. Based on feedback received from the pilot program, the Mahanagarpalika is preparing to expand it to other schools. According to Nyaupane, peer-to-peer learning among children, practical learning and role-play, and record-keeping and monitoring are the main learning methods. After providing a curriculum-based 3-month training, students will be allowed for the remaining 9 months to conduct preventive health promotion programs in groups.
Mahanagarpalika Education Officer Keshav Gyawali stated that the School Management Committee, the principal, and teachers will be informed about the program, and that implementation will be easier only if they are able to understand the finer aspects.
