Medical Education Commission Approves Scholarship Grant Procedure
Kathmandu, Asar 1 — The Medical Education Commission has decided to approve and issue the Scholarship Grant Procedure, 2083. The decision was made at a meeting of the Commission held today at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Balendra Shah.
According to Deepa Dahal, press and research expert to Prime Minister Shah, the Commission passed the procedure within less than 24 hours of receiving consent from the Ministry of Education and Sports and the Ministry of Finance. With this, it has been stated that the way has been opened for a long-term resolution of the legal ambiguity and problems that had existed in the past.
After Section 54(b) was added to the National Medical Education Act, 2075 through the Ordinance Made to Amend Some Nepal Acts, 2083, published in the Nepal Gazette, the Commission received the legal basis to prepare the necessary directives and procedures.
Earlier, due to Section 35 of the Legislation Act, 2081, all previous directives and procedures of the Commission had automatically become invalid, creating a legal vacuum. To resolve the issue, consent with a positive opinion was received from the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Education and Sports on Asar 1.
The approved procedure has opened the way to move forward with the distribution of grants to public teaching institutions in return for providing free scholarships. On behalf of the Commission, grants can now be distributed to teaching institutions that provide medical education, in return for offering free scholarships at all levels, including the postgraduate level as well as DM and MCh.
Health and Food Hygiene Minister Nisha Mehta served as co-chair of the meeting. The meeting was also attended by Commission Vice-Chairperson Prof. Dr. Shrikrishna Giri and other members.
