Nepal’s Education Investment and Infrastructure Development

Notable achievements have begun to be realized from past investments and the development of educational infrastructure in Nepal.

The gross enrollment rate in pre-primary education has reached 84.7 percent, while the percentage of children enrolling in Grade 1 with the experience of Early Childhood Development has reached 66.9 percent, according to the National Planning Commission.

According to the Commission, the net enrollment rates are:

  • Primary level from Grades 1 to 5: 96.9 percent

  • Basic level from Grades 1 to 8: 92.7 percent

  • Secondary level from Grades 8 to 12: 46.4 percent

The retention rates up to Grade 5 and Grade 8 are reported as 89.6 percent and 77.9 percent respectively.

The Commission has also informed that 7,145,525 students are enrolled and studying at the basic and secondary levels.

There are 974,000 children studying in Early Childhood Development education.

The Gender Parity Index at the basic level and secondary level is reported as 0.98 and 1.01 respectively, according to the Commission.

The repetition rates have decreased to:

  • 3.8 percent at the basic level from Grades 1 to 5

  • 4.4 percent from Grades 6 to 8

  • 3.7 percent at the secondary level from Grades 9 to 10

According to the Commission, currently 35,055 schools are operating across the country including public and private investment.

By mobilizing parental investment, the private sector is providing services to about 23 percent of the students in Nepal’s school education.

In the 2011 Census, the literacy rate of the population aged 15 and above was recorded at 58 percent, whereas in the fiscal year 2074/75, the literacy rate of the 15 to 24 age group reached 88.6 percent.

According to the method book of major economic indicators published by the Commission, 51 districts have been declared literate so far.
