Second Economic Census to Begin Nationwide from Baisakh 2
The second National Economic Census will begin nationwide from Wednesday, Baisakh 2.
According to the National Statistics Office, enumerators and the required supervisors have already reached their assigned areas across the country for this task.
As per the schedule, the field-level data collection work will be completed by the first week of Asar. Around 5,000 personnel have been mobilized for this large-scale census being conducted across the country.
Details from 18 Economic Sectors to Be Collected
Under this census, basic information will be collected from 18 economic sectors, including the number, type, investment, employment, production, and service delivery of industries, businesses, the service sector, cooperatives, private-sector entities, and public institutions.
During data collection, both registered and unregistered large and small business establishments across the country will be covered. In addition, the census will also include establishments that provide large-scale employment or self-employment, other industries and factories, non-governmental organizations, government institutions, and government or private schools and hospitals.
As the data collection is linked to the country’s overall industrial and economic sectors, the Ministry of Finance has urged everyone to provide the necessary support and contribution to this work. This census is also relevant to understanding Nepal’s broader demographic and socioeconomic situation and how data informs economic policy decisions.
Preparations Completed, 84 Offices Established
The preparatory work for the economic census had already been completed by the end of Falgun.
To make the census work effective, a total of 84 offices were established at the beginning of Chaitra, including offices in all 77 districts and an additional 7 offices. These offices will remain in operation until the end of Asar.
Earlier, Nepal conducted its first National Economic Census in 2075 BS. That first census had reported that 923,356 establishments and businesses were operating across the country. Such figures are also important for assessing the impact of population growth on economic development.
