Nepal Zoological Society Holds 10th AGM, Calls for Separate Zoology Department
The 10th Annual General Meeting of the Nepal Zoological Society was held on Saturday at the seminar hall of the Central Department of Zoology, Tribhuvan University in Kirtipur. Around 80 zoologists and professors from across the country participated in the meeting.
The meeting emphasized that the government should establish a separate zoology department to institutionalize the study, research, and human resource development related to zoology in Nepal. Highlighting the important role of zoologists in wildlife and biodiversity conservation, research, and management, the Society urged the government to connect zoology with research, innovation, and conservation.
Programs and reports from all seven provinces were presented at the meeting. Discussions were also held on organizing an International Zoological Congress this year in collaboration with various organizations.
The meeting also introduced a policy for the coming year aimed at encouraging young scientists and researchers. According to information provided by Baburam Banjade, immediate past president of the Nepal Zoological Society, Lumbini Province, the Society aims to provide grants each year to at least two postgraduate zoology students for research and academic work using funds collected from life members.
The program was chaired by Society President Prof. Dr. Hari Prasad Sharma. Former president and former Vice-Chancellor of Mid-West University, Prof. Dr. Nanda Bahadur Singh, attended as the chief guest. Experts, professors, and researchers from the field of zoology were also present.
