Newly Appointed TU Service Commission Chair Kishor Thapa and Member Maskey Take Oath
Minister for Education and Sports and Pro-Chancellor of Tribhuvan University (TU), Sasmit Pokharel, has administered the oath of office and secrecy to newly appointed TU Service Commission Chair Kishor Thapa. Minister Pokharel administered the oath to newly appointed Chair Thapa at a ceremony held today at the Ministry in Singha Durbar.
Prime Minister and TU Chancellor Balendra Shah appointed former Secretary of the Government of Nepal and urban planner Thapa as Chair of the Service Commission. At the same ceremony, in the presence of Education Minister Pokharel, newly appointed Chair Thapa also administered the oath of office and secrecy to newly appointed Commission member Prof. Dr. Regina Maskey.
Chair’s Commitment and Purpose of Appointment
Speaking after the oath-taking ceremony, Chair Thapa expressed his commitment to fulfilling his responsibility with fearlessness, impartiality, and honesty. He said he would emphasize the career development, enhancement of professional competence, and institutional reform of professors and employees working at TU. Expressing gratitude to the government, he assured that, while reflecting on the past history, he would work day and night for the advancement of the university to face the new challenges of the 21st century.
According to the Ministry of Education, these appointments have been made with the objective of making the Service Commission of Tribhuvan University effective, transparent, and friendly to qualified human resources.
Appointment Process
The Chair Recommendation Committee formed under the leadership of the Minister for Education and Sports had recommended the names of three people to the Chancellor after studying, evaluating, and interviewing the applications received. The recommendation committee had called for open applications last Jestha. Based on the same recommendation, Chancellor Shah appointed Thapa as Chair.
Background of Chair Thapa
Known as an architect and urban planner, Kishor Thapa has worked in various responsibilities for more than four decades in the civil service of the Government of Nepal. He served as Secretary at the Ministry of Urban Development; the Ministry of Education, Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation; and the Secretariat of the Water and Energy Commission.
He played a leading role in formulating important government policies such as the National Housing Plan, National Urban Development Strategy, and Technical Education and Vocational Training Policy. Thapa, who also contributed to the post-Gorkha earthquake reconstruction campaign as an expert member of the Steering Committee of the National Reconstruction Authority, is currently involved as an urban planning expert at the Nepal Institute of Urban and Regional Studies and in teaching at Kathmandu University.
