Sunway College Kathmandu and Kanoon AI Announce Three-Year AI Legal-Tech Partnership
Sunway College Kathmandu and Kanoon AI Pvt. Ltd. have announced a three-year strategic partnership to advance research, education and ethical development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Nepal’s legal-technology (legal-tech) sector.
The memorandum of understanding, signed by Sunway College Kathmandu Director Khushal Regmi and Kanoon AI Chief Technology Officer Pranjal Timsina, provides a broad framework for collaboration between academia and industry, with a focus on responsible AI innovation.
Joint Curriculum on AI and Ethics
According to the college, the partners will combine academic rigour and industry expertise to jointly design and deliver a comprehensive programme on “Artificial Intelligence and Ethics.”
This programme will cover:

Core foundations of AI

Ethical principles in AI design and deployment

Bias and fairness in AI systems

Governance models for AI oversight

Practical applications of AI in legal-technology
Research on AI-Based Legal-Tech Solutions
The partnership will also support joint research projects focused on AI-based legal-tech solutions for Nepal’s judiciary and legal sector.
Planned areas of work include:

Natural Language Processing (NLP) for legal documents

AI-enabled case management systems

Predictive analytics tools to support judicial assistance
Focus on AI Policy, Governance and Ethics
Beyond technical applications, the collaboration will promote academic study of AI policy frameworks at national and international levels.

Governance Structure and Shared Responsibilities
According to Sunway College, a joint coordination committee will oversee the partnership, meeting on a quarterly basis to guide and monitor implementation.
Under this arrangement:

Kanoon AI will contribute technical expertise, industry experience and access to AI platforms.
The collaboration emphasises joint ownership of intellectual property, compliance with data protection requirements and transparent governance. The college states that these principles are intended to position both institutions as leading actors in responsible AI development.
