Tribhuvan University (TU) has recorded a modest improvement in its standing in the Times Higher Education (THE) rankings.
According to information shared by TU at a press conference held on February 25, 2026 [2082 Falgun 13 (BS)], TU has been listed within the top 1,500 universities in the Times Higher Education ranking. TU also stated that its position in 2025 was the same.
However, TU’s score increased in 2026. TU received 23.52% in 2026, compared to 23.2% last year.
Times Higher Education is described as a recognized institution that determines global university rankings. The rankings are used to understand the standing and performance of universities worldwide.
TU stated that THE determines rankings using indicators such as teaching, research quality, the research environment, and investment. Among these, the highest weight is given to research.
At the press conference, TU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Deepak Aryal said that there are sufficient grounds to place TU much higher than its current position, but technical issues have prevented that. He said THE relies on materials found through the university website and other online sources, but many TU research journals are not available online.
He further said that in journals published by TU faculty and TU-affiliated campuses, TU’s name is sometimes not mentioned. As a result, such work is not included in the data collected by THE, which affects TU’s ranking.
TU stated that it has made notable progress in global image and overall ranking, and that it has performed well in subject rankings. In particular, in Medicine and Health, TU is ranked 601st globally, which TU said is better than most Indian universities except around half a dozen.
TU also claimed that this achievement has made quality medical education possible within the country. It further stated that the Institute of Engineering (IOE) is ranked 1,003rd. TU also said it is competitive with many Indian universities in Education Studies, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences.
