About the Scholarship Program

The "George Band Memorial Higher Education Scholarship" was established in memory of George Band, the first climber to set foot on Mt. Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest and Nepal’s second-highest peak.

This scholarship program has been running for the past 13 years, and so far, 106 students have benefited from it.

According to READ Nepal, approximately NPR 8,812,056 has been spent to provide scholarships to students pursuing higher education to date.

READ Nepal’s Contributions to Education

READ Nepal has been working for 17 years to improve the quality of education in 10 wards — all seven wards of Phaktanglung Rural Municipality and three wards of Sirijangha Rural Municipality — which are geographically remote and difficult to access.

With financial support from Himalayan Trust UK, and in coordination with the Education Development and Coordination Unit Taplejung, Sirijangha, and Phaktanglung Rural Municipalities, READ Nepal has been carrying out:

  • Teacher training and recognition programs

  • Support for educational materials

  • Development of science laboratories and libraries

  • Arrangement of drinking water

  • Construction of toilets and school buildings

This year, READ Nepal expanded its working area to Sawadin (Ward-1), Khejenim (Ward-2), and Lingkhim (Ward-3) of Phaktanglung Rural Municipality and increased the scholarship quota to 12 students, compared to only seven recipients in previous years.

Before the expansion, READ Nepal’s educational activities covered four wards of Phaktanglung and three wards of Sirijangha Rural Municipality.
