Overview

Nepal Police Syllabus

The Nepal Police (Nepal Prahari) syllabus is not only a tool to select exam candidates; it is also a benchmark of the minimum knowledge, legal awareness, and mental capacity required of a future police officer or constable.

As an academic, I have analyzed this syllabus through three main dimensions: intellectual ability (IQ), language accuracy (Language), and legal and professional knowledge (Professional Knowledge).

Below is a detailed explanation of the syllabus set for different posts.

Nepal Police Building

Police Inspector Syllabus

For the Police Inspector (Inspector) post, the written examination is 300 marks in total. It is divided into three papers.

First Paper: General Knowledge (GK) and Intelligence Test (IQ) – 100 Marks

This paper includes objective questions.

General knowledge (50 marks): Questions are asked on Nepal’s geography, historical background, economic development, science and technology, environment, and international organizations (especially the United Nations and SAARC).

Intelligence test (50 marks): This section tests verbal, non-verbal, and numerical reasoning. It is included to assess the candidate’s problem-solving ability.

Negative marking: 20 percent marks will be deducted for each wrong answer.

Second Paper: English and Nepali Language – 100 Marks

This tests the candidate’s communication and report-writing capability.

English (50 marks): Grammar, comprehension, essay writing, and the most important component, police report writing. Since the police may need to coordinate with international bodies, special emphasis is placed on English.

Nepali (50 marks): Nepali grammar, précis writing, note writing, and contemporary essays. Accurate and clear Nepali writing is mandatory for an officer.

Third Paper: Professional Practical Knowledge and Legal System – 100 Marks

This paper prepares the candidate mentally for police service.

Constitution of Nepal: Fundamental rights and duties, the state structure, and provisions related to security agencies.

Legal system: Key provisions of the Muluki Criminal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code.

Police Act and Regulations: Detailed study of the Nepal Police Act 2012 and Police Regulations 2071.

Human rights: Rights of persons in custody and police conduct.

Case study: Practical questions that assess how a candidate makes decisions when given a security-challenge scenario.

Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Syllabus

The ASI syllabus is somewhat simpler than the Inspector’s, but it is fundamentally similar. It is also 300 marks.

First Paper: General Knowledge and Intelligence Test – 100 Marks

This includes questions on an introduction to Nepal, the structure of the police organization, and general reasoning.

Second Paper: Nepali and English Language – 100 Marks

Nepali (60 marks): Letter writing, grammar, and essays.

English (40 marks): Basic grammar (tense, preposition) and short report writing.

Third Paper: Professional Practical Knowledge – 100 Marks

General knowledge related to police service.

The police role in crime prevention.

The relationship between citizens and the police.

Basic legal knowledge (arrest warrant, search, and similar matters).

Police Constable Syllabus

The written examination for Police Constable (Prahari Jawan) is 100 marks and is generally based on the Grade 10 (SEE) level.

  1. Nepali (30 marks): Basic grammar, letter writing, and essays.

  2. English (15 marks): Basic word meanings, singular/plural, and simple translation.

  3. Mathematics (25 marks): Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentage, profit-loss, and average.

  4. General knowledge and police service (30 marks): Nepal’s geography, national identity, and information related to police posts and rank insignia.

Syllabus for Technical Posts

For technical posts (doctor, engineer, nurse, computer, and others), the syllabus has two main parts:

General knowledge and service-related: Questions on basic information about police service.

Subject-specific technical paper: Depending on the discipline applied for (for example, nursing for staff nurse, engineering for engineer), the detailed syllabus is as prescribed by the Public Service Commission.

Academic Analysis of the Syllabus: Why These Subjects?

As an academic, I see several scientific reasons behind including these subjects in the syllabus.

Why IQ? Police must make quick decisions in the field. IQ tests the speed of thinking and logical capacity.

Why law? A police officer who does not know the law can be as dangerous as an offender. Therefore, strict emphasis is placed on the Constitution and criminal laws.

Why language? Police work is largely documentation. A small wording mistake can result in an innocent person going to jail or an offender being released. Therefore, language accuracy is mandatory.

Recommended Study Materials for Preparation

  1. Official laws: Constitution of Nepal, Nepal Police Act 2012, Police Regulations 2071, and Muluki Criminal Code 2074 (download and study from government websites).

  2. Textbooks: Secondary-level Nepali, English, and Mathematics books (for Constable and ASI).

  3. Current affairs: Gorkhapatra Gyan Sagar and news from Radio Nepal/Nepal Television.

  4. Public Service Commission books: Guide books by experienced authors available in the market, but facts must always be cross-checked with official sources.

Examination Strategy

Time management: In the written exam, time is limited and questions are many. Do not spend too much time, especially in Mathematics and IQ sections.

Bullet-point answers: When answering subjective questions, write in bullet points rather than long paragraphs. This makes it easier for the examiner to understand.

Stay updated: Remain aware of recent changes (amendments) in Nepal Police structure or laws.

Signature and clean handwriting: Do not overwrite or heavily scratch when writing legal answers. Clear handwriting reflects your personality.

Conclusion

The Nepal Police syllabus aims to prepare a capable, aware, and professional national servant. If you study this syllabus deeply, you will not only be ready for the exam, but you will also build the foundation needed to become a successful police officer in the future.

Read every word of the syllabus carefully and include it in your daily study plan. There is no alternative to hard work, and knowledge of the correct syllabus is half the path to success.

This information is based on the latest syllabus prescribed by the Public Service Commission and Nepal Police. For periodic updates, regularly check the official websites.
