Diploma in Pharmacy at Asian College for Advance Studies, Lalitpur

The Diploma in Pharmacy was introduced at Asian College for Advance Studies, Satdobato, Lalitpur, in 2016 as a CTEVT-affiliated technical health program. In October 2022, ACAS transferred this program, together with its other CTEVT programs, to its sister organization, Shankarapur Academy Pvt. Ltd.

The CTEVT Diploma in Pharmacy is a three-year, yearly-system program designed to prepare middle-level pharmacy personnel for hospital, community, pharmaceutical production, dispensing, medicine management, and related pharmacy services. The curriculum combines foundational sciences, pharmaceutical subjects, laboratory work, and professional field practice.

Eligibility and Admission

Applicants must have passed SEE or SLC. For SEE applicants, the curriculum requires a minimum GPA of 2.0 with C grade in Compulsory English, Mathematics, and Science, or eligibility under the applicable CTEVT admission guidelines.

Applicants are required to submit SEE/SLC certificates and a citizenship or birth registration certificate and must pass the entrance examination administered by CTEVT. Admission selection is based on the merit list of candidates who meet the entry requirements.

Course Structure and Subjects

The first year concentrates on academic and basic science subjects. These include English, Nepali, Social Studies, Anatomy and Physiology, Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany, and Mathematics and Statistics.

The second year moves directly into pharmacy study through Pharmaceutics I, Pharmacology I, Pharmaceutical Chemistry I, Pharmacognosy, Biochemistry and Microbiology, Pharmacotherapeutics I, Pharmaceutical Management, and Public Health Pharmacy. Several subjects include separate practical components.

Third-year study covers Pharmaceutics II, Pharmacology II, Pharmaceutical Chemistry II, Hospital and Clinical Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Jurisprudence and Community Pharmacy Practice, and Pharmacotherapeutics II.

Professional Field Practice

The third year includes an eight-week Comprehensive Field Practice/Workplace Learning component. Four weeks are allocated to hospital pharmacy practice, while another four weeks cover health facilities, community pharmacy, pharmaceutical industry, or regulatory settings.

The practical work includes prescription reading and dispensing, patient communication, medicine distribution, manufacturing processes, quality assurance, adverse drug reaction monitoring, and exposure to regulatory functions.

Pharmacy Practice Focus

The course is structured around the work performed by pharmacy assistants in public and private health institutions. Students study medicine dispensing, prescription interpretation, pharmaceutical preparation, quality assurance, medication use, hospital pharmacy, community pharmacy, and pharmacy-related legal and ethical responsibilities.

The curriculum also includes Nepal Pharmacy Council legislation and professional codes within Pharmaceutical Jurisprudence and Community Pharmacy Practice.

The relevant professional body for pharmacy education and practice is the Nepal Pharmacy Council.
