Mechanical Engineering Structure at KUSoE

KUSoE organizes the bachelor's program in Mechanical Engineering through four named areas:

The overall BE Mechanical Engineering program has 120 seats, corresponding to 30 seats across each of the four areas.

The program structure keeps most Mechanical Engineering study common across the subdivisions. Specialized study is introduced through elective subjects, engineering projects, and industrial training.

This means students graduate within the Mechanical Engineering discipline while completing focused academic work in one of the four areas.

Core Mechanical Engineering Study

The common curriculum develops from mathematics, physical sciences, computing, engineering drawing, and workshop practice into core Mechanical Engineering subjects.

Common study areas across the specialization curricula include:

  • Calculus and advanced mathematics

  • Physics and Chemistry

  • Programming

  • Engineering Drawing

  • Environmental Engineering

  • Material Science and Metallurgy

  • Engineering Mechanics

  • Basic Manufacturing Processes

  • Metrology

  • Numerical Methods

  • Strength of Materials

  • Theory of Machines

  • Engineering Thermodynamics

  • Fluid Mechanics

  • Heat Transfer

  • Instrumentation and Control

  • Production Planning and Control

  • Machine Element Design

  • Engineering Management

Engineering projects also appear at different stages of the program rather than being limited to the final semester.

Four Areas of Mechanical Engineering

Automobile

The Automobile area applies Mechanical Engineering to vehicle systems. Its academic scope includes automobile engineering, engines, chassis and transmission, manufacturing, vehicle dynamics, mechatronics, electrical and electronic systems, maintenance, and related technologies.

Design & Manufacturing

Design & Manufacturing focuses on the relationship between engineering design and production. Its study areas include Machine Element Design, manufacturing processes, production planning, CAD/CAM, industrial automation, robotics, ergonomics, and product development.

Energy Technology

Energy Technology concentrates on energy conversion, renewable energy technologies, energy management, conservation, and the environmental aspects of energy use.

The area covers technologies associated with solar energy, wind energy, biomass, biogas, thermal systems, and other energy applications.

Hydropower

Hydropower focuses on the mechanical engineering of hydropower plants and their equipment. Students encounter hydro-mechanical components, turbines, plant operation, installation, maintenance, testing, micro-hydropower, and related systems. Laboratory work and field visits form part of this area.

Teaching and Practical Learning

The Mechanical Engineering program uses more than lecture-based teaching.

Academic activities include:

  • case studies;

  • group discussions;

  • project assignments;

  • field visits;

  • class presentations;

  • engineering projects; and

  • industrial training.

Student participation in discussions and presentations is incorporated into the teaching structure. The medium of instruction and examination is English.

Final-year elective courses allow students to take subjects connected with their specialization from the options made available by the department.

Industrial Training

Industrial training is part of the Mechanical Engineering degree.

Final-year students are placed in industries according to the relationship among student interest, departmental arrangements, and the participating industry. The training gives students direct exposure to professional engineering environments and the technical practices used in industry.

The type of industrial exposure can differ according to specialization. Automobile students may work in vehicle-related settings, Design & Manufacturing students in production or design environments, Energy Technology students in energy-related organizations, and Hydropower students in areas connected with plant and hydro-mechanical systems.

Eligibility and Admission

Eligibility: Candidates should have passed I.Sc., 10+2, or an equivalent qualification with at least 50% marks in aggregate and at least 50% aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

Applicants must also meet Kathmandu University's applicable undergraduate engineering entrance requirements.

Admission: Application, entrance procedures, selection, enrollment, and related requirements follow Kathmandu University rules and regulations.

Curriculum administration, examinations, results, academic progression, and degree award are also governed by KU.

Skills Developed Through the Program

Because the program combines a common mechanical foundation with specialization study, students can develop abilities related to:

  • engineering mechanics and machine systems;

  • mechanical design;

  • manufacturing processes;

  • thermal and fluid systems;

  • materials and production;

  • instrumentation and control;

  • engineering drawing;

  • project work;

  • industrial problem-solving; and

  • specialization-specific technical work.

The precise mix depends on whether the student follows Automobile, Design & Manufacturing, Energy Technology, or Hydropower.

Career Areas

Mechanical Engineering graduates may consider work connected with the technical areas covered by their specialization.

Relevant sectors include:

  • manufacturing and production;

  • mechanical design and modelling;

  • automobile engineering;

  • industrial automation;

  • energy plants and energy systems;

  • hydropower plants and powerhouses;

  • maintenance and technical operations;

  • research laboratories;

  • engineering consulting; and

  • further study in Mechanical Engineering or related fields.

Career direction depends on the student's specialization, technical competence, practical experience, further qualifications, and employer requirements.

Students planning postgraduate study within the same department can also consider ME in Mechanical Engineering, Master in Planning and Operation of Energy Systems, Energy Efficient Building Design, MS by Research, and PhD study.

Scholarships and Student Support

Kathmandu University School of Engineering has scholarship and financial-support arrangements for undergraduate students.

The KU SOE Scholarship is intended for meritorious and economically needy students. Under the stated arrangement, scholarship support equivalent to one student's fee is available in full or partial form for each 30 fee-paying students. Continuation is subject to the applicable KU academic and scholarship conditions.

Educational loan and other Kathmandu University scholarship categories are also part of the broader student-support structure.
