Tribhuvan University Marks 67th Anniversary: Education Minister Stresses Ending Partisan Power-Sharing and Ensuring Good Governance
Tribhuvan University (TU), Nepal’s oldest and largest higher education institution, celebrated its 67th anniversary, or Annual Day, with various programmes.
At a special ceremony held at the university’s Central Office, Tribhuvan Memorial Building, in Kirtipur, Minister for Education and Sports and the university’s Pro-Chancellor, Sasmit Pokharel, inaugurated the programme by hoisting the national flag of Nepal and the university flag.
Commitment to End Political Interference and Partisan Power-Sharing
Addressing the ceremony, Education Minister Sasmit Pokharel stressed the need to strengthen academic autonomy and end partisan power-sharing within the university.
Assuring that the government would not exert any unnecessary interference or pressure on the university, he directed TU to preserve its distinguished history and implement a merit-based system.
Minister Pokharel said universities had recently become more dynamic following the government’s appointment of qualified vice-chancellors under its vision for higher education reform and transformation.
He also said diplomatic initiatives would be taken to make TU internationally competitive. Cooperation in knowledge, research, and academic exchange would be promoted through a Professor Exchange Program conducted with the involvement of ambassadors.
Vice-Chancellor Thapa’s Commitment to Quality Education and Good Governance
At the programme, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Bhola Thapa expressed his commitment to developing TU, a national heritage of higher education in Nepal, into a more quality-oriented, research-focused, and innovative institution in line with changing circumstances.
He said the university would move forward as a globally competitive institution by developing institutional systems to ensure good governance, promoting interdisciplinary cooperation, and fostering an ethical academic culture.
Long Service Medals and Annual Publications
Professors and employees who had served the university for an extended period were awarded Long Service Medals on the occasion of the anniversary.
Pro-Chancellor and Education Minister Pokharel also launched two annual publications issued by the TU Information and Public Relations Division:

The publications include the university’s annual activities, achievements, research, and future plans.
TU officials, professors, employees, students, representatives of various universities, and stakeholders from the education sector attended the ceremony.
