Arniko Youth Art Award conferred on Surem Deshar

Kathmandu, February 10, 2026 [2082 Magh 27] - Young artist Surem Deshar has been awarded the Arniko Youth Art Award on Friday, February 6, 2026 [2082 Magh 23].

Established by the National Youth Fund in the name of national luminary Arniko, the award includes Rs 40,000 in cash and a certificate of honor. The award was presented by Academician Vijay Thapa.

The Fund said the award was established with the objective of supporting the conservation and development of Nepali art. Deshar received the award for his continuous, commendable work in Nepali traditional, modern, and original painting. For related study pathways, see BFA in Painting and Bachelor of Fine Arts.

Background and work

Surem Deshar, born in a middle-class family in Chapagaun, Lalitpur district, on 2042 Mangsir 24 (BS), has completed a postgraduate degree in art. He has remained active in research, study, investigation, art promotion, and art awareness work.

Deshar began promoting and developing professional art in 2055 (BS) by hanging paintings in the forest area of Bajrabarahi, a religious site in Chapagaun.

Art journeys, exhibitions, and writing

After the Dumja Art Journey held in Sindhuli in 2068 (BS), Deshar has undertaken dozens of art journeys and has completed three solo painting exhibitions.

Active in art-related writing as well, Deshar said, “An artist should not only create art but must also be able to help the state and the public understand its importance through the created art. For this reason, I have not limited myself to art creation alone; I have been working with full focus to help people understand art, life, and the world.”

He said that receiving an award established in the name of a renowned artist has added responsibility to remain even more active in the art field. For academic context, see Master of Fine Art (MFA).

Themes and collection

Deshar, who creates realist art on Nepali public life, natural beauty, culture, and cultural heritage, has also been producing paintings on contemporary themes.

His paintings are not only a composition of colors and lines; they carry a vivid sense that brings stories of emotion, memory, and time. His paintings are collected at national and international levels.
