Belaka-4 Community School Becomes Model School

Belaka-4 Community School Emerging as a Model School

A community school located in Belaka Municipality–4 of Udayapur has been emerging as a model institution. Jana Namuna Secondary School, Gurungchauri, which the Ministry of Education declared under the “One Local Level, One Model School” initiative for community schools, is becoming “model” through infrastructure development and academic reforms.

Infrastructure and Academic Improvements Over Three Years

In the three years since the government declared it a model school, many activities have been underway to make the school genuinely exemplary. Construction of school buildings and other infrastructure, along with multiple initiatives to improve education quality, are in progress.

So far, two modern new buildings have been completed, and a third building is currently under construction.

Funding and MSDP Agreement

Principal Sammar Rai said that under the “Government of Nepal, Model School Development Program (MSDP),” a three-storey, well-equipped building has already been constructed with a grant of NPR 38 million, and another building is under construction.

According to Principal Rai, the school has signed an agreement with MSDP to be fully developed as a model school within five years. Of that period, nearly three years have passed, and within the remaining two years the school plans to complete all required structures. Alongside physical construction, work is also ongoing to fulfill required teacher quotas, provide training, strengthen capacity development, and carry out other activities needed for quality education.

School Area and Land Contribution

The school premises, spread across two bigha of land worth NPR 150 million, were provided by local resident Chandrabahadur Gurung’s two sons, Nirkaji and Arjunkaji, and daughter, Gangamaya.

Within this campus, rapid work is being carried out on physical structures and other school improvement activities in line with the MSDP Detailed Project Report (DPR).

Structures Planned Under the DPR

As per the DPR, construction is underway for structures including attractive buildings, a playground, toilets, a cafeteria, a hostel, and boundary fencing (compound wall).

The DPR also states that around a dozen attractive and well-equipped blocks (buildings) will be constructed within the premises. It further mentions plans for:

  • A spacious playground

  • A stage in the middle of the ground with a Saraswati temple

  • Separate residential buildings for male and female students

  • A library

  • A review hall building (auditorium hall)

Principal Rai also said there is a plan to build a flower garden within the school premises.

A five-year master plan has been prepared to construct all these structures. Principal Rai stated that the technical cost estimate for the entire plan is NPR 340 million.

Academic Programs Offered

According to School Management Committee Chairperson Manoj Tamang, the school has been running civil engineering under the technical stream from Grade 9.

At Grades 11 and 12, teaching is being provided in Science, Education, and Management.

Student Growth and Free Science Education

Three years ago, the school had 315 students. At present, the number has reached 1,800.

Science education, which is costly in private schools due to high fees, has been arranged to be studied free of charge at this school.
